Few plants bring tropical flair to the garden quite like Canna. With its bold foliage and vibrant blooms, this summer standout creates an instant focal point wherever it is planted. Whether showcasing fiery reds, sunny yellows, bright oranges, or soft pinks, Cannas deliver big color with even bigger personality, instantly transforming any space into a lush, eye-catching display.

In the landscape, Canna adds dramatic height, rich texture, and nonstop energy to garden spaces. Its large, architectural leaves create a striking backdrop for surrounding plants, while its continuous blooms attract hummingbirds throughout the season. Perfect for creating a vacation-like feel at home, Canna thrives in warm weather and rewards gardeners with months of vibrant, tropical-inspired color.

Canna performs best in full sun and rich, well-draining soil, where consistent moisture is key, especially during hot weather. Regular feeding throughout the growing season helps support vigorous growth and abundant blooms. In USDA Zones 7-11, it can be grown as a perennial, while in colder climates it is often treated as an annual or lifted and stored for winter. Removing spent blooms and damaged foliage keeps plants looking fresh and encourages continued performance.

Emily Hunter is our Executive Assistant based in the Huntersville office and will celebrate her 3-year anniversary with Metrolina this November. Benefits and Leaves Specialist Alisha Cashwell shared that Emily consistently demonstrates the core values of People, Quality, and Integrity through her positive approach, strong organizational skills, and commitment to supporting those around her. Whether coordinating initiatives or helping teammates, Emily is known for being reliable and accountable.

When asked what motivates her to live out these values, Emily shared, "I believe in doing the right thing, treating people well, and putting in my best effort. Since my role connects me with so many different teams and people, I try to be someone others can count on."

Outside of work, Emily enjoys spending time with family and friends, cheering on her son at his games, and making memories with the people who matter most to her. She says the perennial plant category best represents her because, "They come back year after year, adjust to different conditions, and keep growing." She aims to approach her work in the same way by being "dependable, adaptable, and always improving."

This past weekend, members of our York and Huntersville Community Outreach teams volunteered their time to help care for our surrounding communities. As part of our Adopt-a-Highway commitment, the teams spent the morning cleaning local roadsides and collected 15 bags of trash across both locations.

Their efforts are a great reminder that teamwork extends beyond our operations and into the communities where we live and work. Thank you to everyone who dedicated their time to helping keep our roads clean and beautiful.

York volunteers: Sue Craig, Karlynne Marquez, Jasmine Mackey, Mallory Shaw, Greg Mitchell, and Stephen Camp.
Huntersville volunteers: Wendy Hernandez-Amaya, Cheryl Devito, Ali Dutton, and Yomira Martinez.

Platycodon, commonly known as Balloon Flower, adds a touch of whimsy to the garden with its unique balloon-shaped buds that slowly inflate before bursting open into star-shaped blooms. Available in shades of blue, purple, pink, and white, these charming flowers bring long-lasting color and curiosity to sunny garden spaces. Their unusual flowers create a delightful surprise, making them a favorite among gardeners looking for something a little different.

In the landscape, Platycodon offers a neat, compact habit that blends beautifully with other perennials and mixed plantings. It performs best in full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil, producing reliable blooms throughout the summer on sturdy, upright stems. Moderate watering will keep plants thriving, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Removing spent blooms helps encourage continued flowering and keeps plants looking tidy. Hardy in USDA Zones 3-8, Balloon Flower is an easy-care perennial that delivers season after season of unique charm.

Rudbeckia lights up the garden with cheerful, golden blooms that seem to capture the warmth of summer sunshine. Commonly known as Black-Eyed Susan, this classic perennial creates a bold display of color while attracting butterflies and other beneficial pollinators throughout the season. Its bright flowers provide months of vibrant color, making it a standout addition to sunny garden spaces.

In the landscape, Rudbeckia is prized for its long-lasting blooms, sturdy growth habit, and ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions. It performs best in full sun and average to well-draining soil, requiring only moderate watering while becoming more drought tolerant as it matures. Minimal fertilization is needed to keep plants looking their best. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage additional blooms, while leaving seed heads in place adds fall and winter interest and provides a food source for birds. Hardy in USDA Zones 3-9, Rudbeckia is an easy-care perennial that delivers dependable beauty season after season.

The Trial Gardens on June 5 brought the energy!

Guests explored new plant varieties in full bloom, walked the trials, and weighed in on which varieties stand out in real-world growing conditions. From focus groups to voting on plant favorites, the feedback came in loud and clear, and it made the day even better.

Big thanks to everyone who showed up and shared their picks to influence what's coming next to garden centers. We’re still feeling the buzz and already looking forward to doing it again next year!

Echinacea, commonly known as coneflower, is a garden favorite that combines vibrant color with lasting durability. Its daisy-like blooms and distinctive raised centers attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, bringing life and movement to the garden from summer through fall. With its long bloom season and dependable performance, Echinacea adds beauty long after many other flowers have faded.

Once established, Echinacea thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, handling heat and dry conditions with ease. Water regularly while plants are getting established, then enjoy their drought tolerance as they mature. This low-maintenance perennial requires little fertilizer and benefits from occasional deadheading to encourage additional blooms. Alternatively, leave the seed heads in place to provide winter interest and a food source for birds. Hardy in USDA Zones 3-9, Echinacea is an easy-care choice that returns year after year with reliable color and pollinator appeal.
