Health update
Hello all! Hard to believe it’s already June 2025, but time just seems to keep picking up speed as I age. We all have a story to tell, especially as we get older, this is my story. Thank you for taking the time to read it.
To briefly review, I was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma for the fourth time in spring of 2024. This time it was attached to my colon and just under 3 cm. The doctors were hoping to shrink the cancer to avoid surgery by giving me a new immunotherapy drug that has had great success. Unfortunately, during my second treatment back in September of last year, I ended up with an immunological reaction to the immunotherapy that almost killed me. It did, however put me in the hospital for eight days with heart failure. At that point, I was unable to treat the cancer through surgery or immunotherapy due to my heart condition.
We didn’t know if my heart would recover but thankfully by late February I was well enough to operate on and the doctors removed the cancer. Fortunately, I have a rare slow growing melanoma, so it had not grown much during the time where I had no treatment. It was a tricky surgery and the doctors weren’t sure if they were able to get all the cancer without removing a portion of my colon. We will have to keep a close eye on everything.
Apparently immunotherapy is no longer an option for me so I’m not sure how we are going to treat the cancer if it does come back. For now, I am in on the mend, however still very weak, but getting better every day. I just got the results from my three month PET- CT scans and there were no signs of reoccurrence of the cancer, so I guess technically I am currently in remission, and very happy about it.
My son has been running the shop and is doing a great job. Jeanne and Ian have asked me to continue to rest and I am happy to oblige after that wild ride.
Thank you all who have supported me during this difficult time, all of the kindness really does make a difference.
