Newborn Care Specialist and Pediatric Sleep Consultant! Kadie is excited to partner with Balanced Sleep to bring a strong focus on newborn sleep.

Kadie provides support through her Newborn Sleep Shaping program which includes a tried & true custom no cry method.

Throughout the years Kadie has worked with postpartum families to guide them through those very first sleep issues and help build a foundation for healthy sleep habits.

This Friday, June 10th, at 8pm PDT, we will be hosting our free "Understanding Newborn Sleep" zoom class!

We had our first "Understanding Newborn Sleep" zoom session two weeks ago! It went so well, and we're very excited to be hosting it again. The zoom session will run for about 1 hour and we will open for questions in the last half. Just like last time, we will be gifting every participant our Newborn Safe Sleep Guide as a thank you for joining us!

WAKING 30 MINUTES TO ONE HOUR AFTER BEDTIME⁠

This is called a "False Start Bedtime"⁠

Waking 30 minutes to an hour after bedtime is an extremely classic sign of a baby being overly tired.⁠

Make sure your baby is getting enough daytime sleep and watch the last wake window before bed. ⁠

The last wake window can be a little bit longer than the rest but too long can cause night wakings or even early mornings.⁠

I see this happening very often. Anyone going through this now?⁠

DO BABIES CRY IN THEIR SLEEP?⁠

Yes! ⁠
Babies are very active sleepers. This could mean they open their eyes, sit up, stand up, and/or cry all while fast asleep.⁠

When transitioning through sleep cycles (which your newborn will do a lot faster then older infants, toddlers, or adults) they may cry when that transition happens. ⁠

Some may cry more when over tired or have a had time self soothing due to needing/wanting parents help. ⁠

I mainly see more boys cry and move around more if they do not get enough active time during the day.⁠
Remember, tummy time is vey important to their sleep.⁠

How do we handle these situations? ⁠

It is always best to wait to see if they can transition to the next cycle and put themselves back to sleep before rushing in and disrupting the soothing process. ⁠

Time for feeding or should we try for some relax time?⁠

Different situations call for different actions!⁠

If your child is hungry, YOU WILL KNOW. Your biggest cue is the time in which their last feeding was and how much they ate. ⁠

🤍If you are struggling with full feedings work on that first before extending any sleep. You can do this by waiting a few minutes before rushing in. Once you pull them out wait until you see hunger cues to feed. A hungry baby will have a full feeding, and start to relax when full. If they struggle with the bottle, check ni**le size or lactation consultant for breast feeding. ⁠

Has had a full feeding but usually sleeps longer. I would allow for 20-30 minutes for quiet time without rushing in to see if they can put themselves back to sleep. If your baby wakes up not totally upset, it's ok to let them rest in a dark room. ⁠

🤍Timing is so important! Your child could be going through a shift in sleep times and need a schedule change. Keep trying for the same times in naps for at least 2 weeks before changing things up. ⁠

If your child struggles with negative sleep associations, you can work on setting them down with using a sleep method that works for both you and baby. This can help with switching cycles during the day. ⁠
