Ladies & Gentleman, the Purple Gallinule.

I captured this beauty during a trip to Everglades National Park. One of the coolest things to watch was how effortlessly it walked across lily pads. Their incredibly long toes spread out their weight, allowing them to walk on floating vegetation that would never support most birds.

Purple Gallinules are one of the most vividly colored birds in all of North America. In the U.S you can find them year round in southern Florida.

A year ago, I noticed something unusual about this Snowy Egret but couldn’t get close enough to understand. I went back to Bolsa Chica many times after that but never saw it again. This past week I went birding and to my surprise there it was. Thankfully this time I was able to get a closer look. I was happy to see that it was still alive and whatever it has going on wasn’t impending on its survival. Swipe to see it up close. To me it looks like maybe it grew a second tongue? Anyone else have any ideas?

Patience is the heron’s greatest hunting tool.

A Great Blue Heron can stand perfectly still for long stretches, waiting for the right moment. When prey comes within range, that long neck strikes with lightning speed. Their sharp bill works like a dagger to catch prey, which they swallow whole—no chewing required. While fish are their main meal, these patient hunters will also eat insects, crustaceans, frogs, turtles, rodents, and even small birds. You can find them hunting in freshwater, saltwater, riverbanks, and open fields. So the next time you see one just standing around, think again. It’s probably hunting.

Mockingbirds are mimics, they don’t produce their own song instead they imitate other birds, frogs, and even car horns. These sounds are learned, memorized, and then incorporated into the mockingbird’s repertoire.

This makes mockingbird songs unique to each bird. Songs are long series of phrases repeated 2-6 times before shifting to a new sound. Mockingbirds are open-ended learners, meaning they can learn new songs throughout their adulthood. Many males can have up to 200 songs in their repertoire. The more songs a male has, the older he is.

Males have different songs sets for spring and fall. It is believed that their spring songs are used to attract mates, while their fall sounds are to defend territory.
