Quite a memorable hike !
On this day, 1926, the trail to Scouts Lookout was completed. Construction work began in the fall of 1923 and the trail was dedicated on July 11, 1926. This section of trail includes Walter's Wiggles, named after Walter Ruesch, who served as the park's first superintendent from 1919 to 1925. The trail was updated many times since then, but is considered a park favorite today!
Also on this day, in 1956, Zion National Monument became part of Zion National Park. This national monument was established in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and includes the Kolob Canyons section of the park. Since Zion was established as a national park in 1919, it has expanded in size from 76,800 acres to 148,733 acres, almost doubling in size.
