Gene told me that Jean Hagen was "the glue that held the movie together" in Singin' in the Rain. He said her casting was the only dispute he had with Arthur Freed and Stanley Donen. They wanted to cast a more standard Hollywood beauty. Gene insisted on Hagen. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role, but lost to GLORIA Grahame (for The Bad and the Beautiful).
