Compassionate Pet Parent

This month’s spotlight is on Susan. She was born in L.A. California, then moved to Kansas when she was 5. She attended schools in the Overland Park area with her two brothers and one sister, before moving to the Chicago area in the mid 90’s. Her love of animals started at an early age growing up with four Sheltie dogs, two Cockatiels, six parakeets and now her beloved dog, Sprout. She also fondly remembers roller skating with her baby sister, in their teens. Susan worked a variety of jobs before coming to live in our community, including McDonald’s, Furr’s Cafeteria, two nursing homes in Kansas, and retail stores in Chicago. She was even a “movie extra” in a few films! When she found herself needing to find a different place to live due to medical issues, she did a lot of research before finding Deer Path. Since she loves to socialize, she found the residents here were easy to talk to and she loves the wide variety of activities offered here. She keeps herself busy volunteering as part of the “Welcome Committee” and other activities and also hopes to be on the Resident Council someday. Susan describes herself as “compassionate and understanding” and is more than happy to sit and chat with new or current residents or staff. Thank you for choosing Deer Path Susan, we’re so happy that you chose our community to call “home.”

Another Petting Zoo adventure– And, New Friends, Too (by Nico)

While making my way outside for the Kate’s Kritters petting zoo, I lost my way to the cut-through, and my chair tipped forwards a bit. I didn't fall out or anything, as my feet were in their straps-- so it was easy for our activity director to help get me unstuck.
"What would you like to hold first?" I'd been asked when I came outside for the petting zoo today.
"What did you bring?" I asked, remembering the lineup from last year.
"We have some new friends," I was told.
"I'll take a bunny," I said, thinking of Danielle.
I held one, bunny, then traded someone else after getting a picture taken.
"Who do you want now?"
"What's available?"
"Have you ever held a guinea pig?
I got to pet one years ago-- even held one when the zoo came last year; however, the one I held today was different. This time around, the little critter was in a pouch-- wrapped like a swaddling baby.
I was then plopped with two chickens, who I was told were named "Izzy and Frizzy.
"How do you know who's who?" I wanted to know
One of the zoo ladies admitted that she couldn't remember which chicken was which.
While I had the two black-colored chickens on me, a goat stopped by-- and I got to feel it at the same time.
"Would you like to see the ducks?"
I was then plopped with baby ducklings-- only two weeks old. They were adorable and very fuzzy-fluffy.
"Haha," Danielle laughed at me, teasing me about how she's the only one who can hold "Fat Albert", the biggest bunny who came with the travelling zoo-- just like last time.
I was told that they had to retire one of the petting zoo animals from being a part of the trips because of how it has difficulty getting into the van– due to getting older.
