I always feel honored to be chosen to document a couple's wedding, but when Jordan asked me to shoot her wedding to Michael on November 10th, the overwhelming feeling I had was gratitude, and the reason I was so thankful was because Jordan's father was my friend and she lost both of her wonderful parents a few years ago only weeks apart, so being able to be there to hear her vows to a man that I know her mom and dad would have loved was very emotional. I know they were both in attendance Saturday because the love that surrounded them both was tremendous. It was a day achingly filled with both loss and love. I'm so glad to have witnessed it.

Michael & Kaitlyn's wedding on Saturday. It rained all day but since Kaitlyn just graduated with a meteorology degree, she said it was only fitting, haha. So, rain on your wedding day? Still cool!

This is Rico, my much beloved grandson hiking on Green Mountain on his birthday weekend. He just turned 2! I didn't post this just to show you how amazing he is (but...bonus!), but because it's a perfect example of the kind of photography I love to do best with children.

In this photo, I didn't pose, arrange or direct him; I ran ahead a bit, found the light direction and quality I wanted and positioned myself so the curve of the trail would be in my frame, then waited for him to enter it.

And I was rewarded with this stunning image of a child caught doing what he was doing with complete naturalness and truth. What makes this work is what I as a photographer was doing to bend myself around his expected path rather than bending him to my will.

I'd love to see more photographers try this documentary approach to capture the true wonder of children just doing the ordinary, miraculous things they do every day.

Are we there yet? :)
