Customer called after we replaced the brakes on his trailer and sent us a picture saying, “You bent my axle.”

His concern was that we had the trailer jacked up by the axle while performing the brake job, and he thought the weight of the trailer caused the axle to bend.

The good news? Nothing was wrong.

What he was seeing was the camber built into the axle from the factory.

Most trailer axles have a slight upward bow in the middle on purpose. When the trailer is loaded, that camber helps the tires sit flat on the road and wear properly.

A lot of people mistake axle camber for a bent axle, especially when they first notice it.

If both axles have a similar upward bow, there’s a good chance you’re looking at camber, not damage.

We hope this helps someone avoid replacing a perfectly good axle.

Your axle might not be bent…

A customer recently called and said his mechanic told him his trailer axle was bent.

Not so fast.

Most trailer axles are actually built with a slight upward bend in the middle. It’s called camber, and it’s there on purpose.

Here’s an easy way to tell:

✅ Both axles have the same slight upward bend = probably normal.

❌ One axle is bent differently than the other = you may have a problem.

Think of it like this: cambered trailer axles are designed with a little bow in them. When the trailer is loaded, that bow helps the tires sit flat on the road.

This is also why having a knowledgeable trailer mechanic is important.

Unfortunately, we get calls every day from “trailer repair” shops and mechanics who don’t understand basic trailer suspension, axle, brake, and bearing systems. The result is customers being told they need parts they don’t actually need.

A good mechanic can save you money. A bad mechanic can cost you a lot of it.

Customer had a 10K Dexter axle fail and decided to upgrade to Carter 12K electric brake axles.

One thing many people don’t realize is that upgrading from 10K to 12K axles isn’t always as simple as bolting them on.

True 12K axles use 3” wide springs, while most 10K setups use 2-1/2” springs. To do it properly, you’ll need new springs, hangers, and suspension components to match.

Some people install 12K axles and keep their 10K suspension to avoid cutting off and rewelding hangers. While that gives them larger brakes and better stopping power, the suspension is still the limiting factor.

One thing many people don’t realize: just because you install 12K axles doesn’t automatically make your suspension 12K rated. (24k GVWR for tandem setups)
