There are moments as a facilitator when you look around the room and your heart leaps to realize the learning isn't coming from the front of the room anymore.

It's happening around every table.

Today was one of those days.

The Leadership Learning Lab – Level Up Your Leadership: From Position to Presence wasn't just a conversation about John Maxwell's 5 Levels of Leadership. It became a conversation about who we're becoming as leaders.

We talked about trust before authority. Character before position. Presence before performance.

But what I'll remember most are the conversations that happened between participants—the stories they shared, the questions they asked, and the willingness to be honest about where they are on their own leadership journeys.

Thank you to everyone who spent part of your Thursday learning, challenging one another, and making this community such a rewarding place to facilitate. Thank you to Kenny Anderson for continually encouraging others to invest in their own growth. Always grateful to William T. Olson III, PMP and Bethany Ashmore for bringing such thoughtful perspectives to these conversations. I was especially excited to have Dana Stone in the room with the unique business perspective she brings to the topic of leadership growth.

There were several new folks today, too, which is always exciting to have new voices in the room, such as Sundee Makupson - M. Ed in Educational Leadership and Yesenia Arreola. Thank you for your contributions! And I'm especially thankful to Melissa Jones, who is amazing and always has such hilarious tales of leadership to share.

A special thank you to everyone who helped make the day possible and to those who took the time to share such encouraging feedback afterward. It means more than you know.

📸 Here are a few moments from the day.

Our next Leadership Learning Lab is already on the calendar:

This keynote has been a true labor of love, and I can't wait to finally share it with this audience.

⚓ What does sailing have to do with leading organizational change?
More than you might think.

When the wind shifts, sailors don't argue with the weather—they adjust the sails.

Organizations are no different. Whether you're leading a new technology implementation, an acquisition, a restructuring, or any significant organizational change, success depends on far more than having a great plan. It depends on helping people navigate the journey together.

I'm excited to share that I'll be speaking at the 2026 Alabama SHRM State Conference in Fairhope!

🗓 Tuesday, August 11
🕐 1:00–2:00 PM

In my session, "Navigating Change: What Sailing Has Taught Me About Leading People Through Uncertainty," we'll explore practical lessons from both organizational change management and offshore sailing, including:
⚓ Why resistance isn't the enemy—it's valuable information.
⚓ How to recognize the "submerged obstacles" that can derail change before they become crises.
⚓ How trust becomes your crew's greatest asset when the seas get rough.
⚓ Why leading people through change is every bit as important as managing the project itself.

As both a Prosci Certified Change Practitioner and an RYA Day Skipper, I've found that some of the most powerful leadership lessons don't come from the boardroom—they come from being out on the water, where conditions can change in an instant.

I'm incredibly grateful to Alabama SHRM for the opportunity to share this message, and I'm looking forward to connecting with HR leaders from across the state.

If you're attending the conference, I'd love to meet you. Stop by my session on Tuesday at 1:00 PM, say hello afterward, and let's talk about how we can help people navigate change with greater confidence.

See you in Fairhope! ⚓
