Lightweight calves led the way, with 300–399 lb steers at Verdigre, NE bringing $655.00, while 400–499 lb steers at Mankato, KS sold for $615.00 and 500–599 lb steers at the same location reached $555.00. Midweight cattle followed with 600–699 lb steers at Manhattan, KS bringing $480.00 and 700–799 lb steers at Lexington, NE at $429.25. Heavier feeders also traded at strong levels, with 800–899 lb steers at Huron, SD bringing $386.50, 900–999 lb steers at Mankato, KS at $356.50, and 1,000–1,099 lb steers at Mankato, KS reaching $332.00.

There have been 1,682 sales of 7-weight steers at $400/cwt or higher in the United States. February accounted for the majority of those sales with 816, followed by January with 512. Activity has continued into the spring with 99 sales recorded so far in March, including 15 occurring today. Prior to the winter surge, totals were significantly lower, with 98 in October, 80 in September, 28 in December, and just 5 in November, while 44 sales occurred before September.

Strong prices continued in the 7-weight market on March 6, with the top sale reported at Burwell, Nebraska, where 80 head averaging 719 lbs brought $439.00/cwt. Several other markets also posted strong results, including Herreid, South Dakota at $423.50, while multiple strings traded from $416.00 to just over $404.00/cwt across Nebraska, South Dakota, and Iowa. In total, 15 sales of 7-weight steers topped $400/cwt today, occurring even as feeder cattle futures fell nearly $7 during the session.
