It's Flashback Friday!

Some signs become part of a city’s story. The Dunes was one of them.

The Dunes Hotel opened on May 23, 1955, as the tenth resort on the Las Vegas Strip. Nearly a decade later, its iconic 181-foot neon pylon, manufactured by Federal Sign, was first illuminated on November 12, 1964. It was the tallest freestanding sign in the world at the time.

Built on an 80-foot-wide foundation, two white columns rose to form its distinctive spade-shaped top. With 16,000 feet of neon tubing and 7,200 lamps, this sign made quite an impression! Its glow was so bright that hotel rooms facing it needed blackout curtains to help guests sleep.

After closing in 1993, the Dunes became the first Las Vegas resort to be imploded. The $1.5 million demolition spectacle drew an estimated 200,000 spectators, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a transformation along the Strip.

The original pylon was destroyed during the demolition, but a smaller Dunes sign survives at in Las Vegas.
