Here’s how the conversation went this morning with Jeremiah’s DME supplier:

Them: Hi Ms. Duell, can you please put all of the wrong sized diapers into one box? We’re sending Fed Ex to pick them up and sending you the correct size. *This is the fourth time this company sent Jeremiah the wrong diapers, hoping we will accept the cheapest brand to save MD $.

Me: Do I look like FedEx to you? Do I look like I have a giant box just lying around to help you save $ by helping your company correct the same mistake over and over again because you or your employees don’t double-check? What is the point of calling me monthly to confirm the supply delivery just to keep sending me the wrong diapers? The diapers are in the boxes that you sent them in.

Them: How many boxes did we send?

Me: Go look at your company invoice that you sent to Medicaid and call me back.

CAREGIVER MOMENT:

Professional weekend care for Jeremiah who needs level III care costs $1,000! This is why you don’t see me at alot of book events, etc. If my fam or his weekday caregiver is unable to care for him, I don’t go. Yes I do pay my fam or his caregiver to keep him. They don’t charge me that price. I don’t make the salary I used to make 2 yrs ago thanks to Gov. Wes Moore. He cut it in half last budget year and he’s trying to cut it again in half by JANUARY.

Just so you know, caregiving is very expensive! Whatever is NOT covered by Jeremiah’s medicaid is covered by me. The same goes for my autistic brother BJ who lives in a group home that is still in my care. Bills on top of bills. The math ain’t mathing BUT GOD!

So when you see me decline an event, this is why. It is embarrassing. It hurts. Nobody talks about the real cost of being a caregiver. The embarrassment, guilt, shame, exhaustion, the tears and the hypervigilance, but I will! This life is not for the faint or the weak. I’m tired of hearing myself saying no to things I really wanna do. 😭

ABOUT YESTERDAY:

I attended PLC - progressing life in the community Kinship Conference. This agency helped me get my siblings the services they needed back in 2008 after our mom passed. I don’t even remember how we met BUT the rest is history. God is good like that! They were the first organization to buy my first book and allow me to host a support group based on my book. Whew! Time flies. The Kinship Care Program helped launch me where I am today.

I got to meet some new kinship caregivers and found out about some new resources for school aged parents. I wanna give a huge SHOUT OUT to Project Manager, Celia Flye for putting This Ability flyers on the exibitor tables showcasing my books. THANK YOU! Ya girl won a nice Giant giftcard too. 🙌🏽 It was so good to see you Evette Maranda Clarke. Thanks for everything!
