: CHANGE YOUR STORY

One of the greatest gifts of life is that we have the power to change our story.

We can tell it better.
We can give it new life.
We can become even better.

We can even create a new ending, which–if you think about it–is really a new beginning.

And when we start with the end in mind, that’s when the story gets really exciting! But before we jump into that new beginning, let’s understand why we might want to change our story in the first place.

❤️WHY CHANGE OUR STORY?❤️

There comes a point in life when we feel stuck, whether it’s in our work, relationships, or personal growth. The story we’ve been living may no longer serve us, but the beautiful part is, we can change it.

Often, we don’t decide to change because we want to. Instead, life throws us into situations we didn’t ask for–challenges that knock us down, tear us apart, and leave us wondering how we’ll ever move forward.

But guess what?

❤️Every time you got knocked down…
❤️Every time you tripped and fell…
❤️Every time you thought you couldn’t keep going…

You were already changing your story!

You may not have realized it, but each moment you chose to stand back up–whether on your own or with someone else’s help–you were writing the next chapter of your life. You were creating a better story.

❤️START WITH THE END IN MIND❤️

Stephen Covey’s “Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind” teaches us to imagine the end before it even happens. He talks about the two creations: mental and physical. Just as a building starts with a blueprint, your future starts with the vision you create in your mind.

When you’re facing adversity, it’s easy to feel like the world is closing in on you. But what if you stopped, took a deep breath, and imagined the story you truly want to live? What if you began with the end in mind?

The truth is, you probably didn’t choose to change your story by doing something hard. But every time life challenged you, you were forced to make a decision: to either stay down or rise again. In making that decision, you’ve already started reshaping your life.

This is where Intentional Leadership comes in. As an Intentional Leader, you get to define your vision, focus your strategy, and empower yourself and others to develop, execute, and achieve. This isn’t just about leading others; it’s about leading yourself through the toughest of times.

❤️When you Focus Your Strategy, you map out the steps to get there.
❤️When you Live Your Promise, you stay committed to that vision no matter what obstacles arise.

Even in the darkest hours, recovery starts with the smallest of steps. It truly is darkest just before dawn, but you are the one who can bring the light. Every choice you make from here on out is part of creating that new story.

: SOAR, GRADUATES, SOAR!

Graduation is a time for reflection, celebration, and anticipation of the future. For the graduates of 2024, the journey ahead is filled with excitement and endless possibilities, mixed with the reality of challenges and trials.

As you step into the life of tomorrow, I share these simple “Power of Three” principles that can guide you through this pivotal moment by choosing to be an Intentional Leader focused on Building a Community, Creating Your Own Story, and Rising and Soaring.

❤️BUILD A COMMUNITY❤️

The power of individual achievement is magnified when you are part of a community that shares your values while also embracing diversity in thought. A community offers support, inspiration, and collective strength. Imagine your goals as seeds; they flourish best in the rich soil of a nurturing community.

Throughout my life, I’ve seen how communities can lift individuals to heights they might never have reached alone. When we connect with others who inspire and challenge us, we find the motivation to achieve more. Whether it’s a study group, a professional network, or a circle of friends, the connections we build can provide invaluable support and guidance.

Being part of a community means contributing to something larger than yourself. It’s about sharing your strengths and learning from others. By working together, we can overcome obstacles and celebrate successes that might be impossible on our own. As you step into and create the next chapter of your life, seek out and build your community. Engage, contribute, and grow together with intentional leadership.

❤️CREATE YOUR OWN STORY❤️

Not long after I graduated from Richfield High School in 1984, the mother-daughter country music duo The Judds released their hit song “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout The Good Old Days).” The lyrics resonated deeply with many:

Sometimes it feels like this world’s gone crazy

When the line between right and wrong
Didn’t seem so hazy

These words remind us of the power of storytelling and the importance of creating our own narratives. As graduates, you are at the beginning of your own stories. Each decision you make, each path you choose, will add to the rich tapestry of your life. Someday, you’ll look back and share your own “good old days” with your children and grandchildren, and with others who will be part of your future generations.

Crafting your story requires intentional leadership. Make conscious choices, take responsibility for your actions, and lead your life in a direction that reflects your values and aspirations.

❤️RISE & SOAR❤️

As parents, watching our children chase their dreams is one of life’s greatest honors. Whether their aspirations are modest or monumental, fostering and nurturing those dreams is a privilege. As parents, we play a crucial role in their journey, much like an eagle caring for its young before they take their first flight.

The process of letting go is both beautiful and bittersweet. We’ve guided them through their early years, teaching them to crawl, walk, and run. Now, it’s time for them to fly. Like the eagle encouraging its fledglings to leave the nest, we must trust in their strength and preparation.

Seeing our children rise and soar, pursuing their passions and carving out their paths, fills us with pride. Our encouragement and support help them spread their wings, ready to explore the vast possibilities before them. This is where intentional leadership comes into play again–providing guidance without holding them back, and empowering them to navigate their own journeys.

To the graduates: As you embark on this exciting new chapter, remember that this is your time to soar. Embrace the journey with confidence, knowing that you have the support of your community, the power to create your own story, and the encouragement to reach for the skies as you rise and soar.

You are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and values that will guide you through the challenges and triumphs ahead. Trust in your abilities, lead with intention, and remember that the sky is not the limit–it is just the beginning. Rise and soar, my friends, and make your mark on the world!

: YOUR FINEST HOUR

Sometimes it’s hard to do hard things.

Even when we want to.

I’ve been there.

You have, too.

Imagine how you will feel when you find that thing inside that empowers you to step out of your comfort zone, wander into the unknown, and boldly go where you have not gone before.

Intentional Leadership teaches us that even when faced with challenging tasks, our inner resolve can guide us through. These moments, though difficult, serve as opportunities for growth and self-discovery.

For years I kept this connected thought from Winston Churchill taped to my keyboard. It was a constant reminder I could step into my confidence in the little moments so I could be prepared to boldly step forward in those bigger moments.

In my own journey, this quote became a guiding light, reminding me to embrace discomfort and uncertainty as stepping stones toward greatness. It encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, knowing that true growth lies beyond its confines.

Yet, stepping into the unknown is daunting. It requires courage to confront our fears and doubts. However, within each of us lies a spark of determination urging us forward.

I’ve experienced this internal struggle firsthand, and perhaps you have too. These moments of uncertainty invite us to lean into our strengths, to embrace challenges, and to seize opportunities for growth.

❤️OUR FINEST HOUR❤️

So, how do we prepare for these pivotal moments that may become our finest hour?

It begins with an intentional mindset–a willingness to see discomfort as a catalyst for growth. For me, it meant taking small steps each day to build confidence and resilience, and seeking support from those who believed in my potential, especially my angel Elisa, along with mentors and coaches.

The journey is not without its obstacles. There will be setbacks and moments of doubt. Yet, it’s in these moments of struggle that our true strength shines through.

As you embark on your journey, remember: you are capable of rising to the occasion. Trust in your abilities, embrace challenges, and believe in the potential of your finest hour.

Because sometimes, the hardest things lead to the most rewarding outcomes. And when you approach challenges with intentional leadership, you will rise in hope and soar in confident greatness.

I continue to discover the greatest parts of life are experienced as I traverse my journey through life rather than waiting on the platitudes of the world.

By focusing on my core promise to “Get Back Up, Every Time, No Matter What,” I continually discover great strength when I intentionally and consistently choose to rise in compassionate hope. And I am blessed with liberation from the bo***ge of poor and unhealthy choices when I intentionally and consistently choose to soar in confident greatness.

While there are still times I feel lost as I crawl through the muck and mire of self-defeat, I keep my Promises. I know this journey of Intentional Leadership I strive to walk is a beautiful journey that truly matters.

Insights from Meridith Elliott Powell...

Her credibility is rock solid. She books more than 80 speaking engagements a year. She is a Certified Speaking Professional and Hall of Fame Speaker, a Member of the Million Dollar Speakers Group, and the current chair of the National Speakers Association (NSA).

: THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF CONFIDENCE

I’ve always been fascinated by the incredible impact confidence can have on our lives. Confidence is almost like a magical force that helps us feel good about ourselves while also attracting positivity and opportunities into our lives.

In writing “The Confident Choice,” I wanted to capture that essence – the beauty, power, and sheer magnetism of confidence. I wanted to remind myself – and you – that we have the power to choose how we navigate through the incredible journey of life. This choice is completely ours, whether we embrace confidence and all its goodness. Or opt for a less hopeful path.

Writing this poem is my way of expressing my strong belief in the transformative power of confidence and encouraging others to make that confident choice in their own lives. When we choose confidence, we’re not just shaping our own journey, we’re also spreading positivity and inspiration to everyone around us.

And that’s the kind of ripple effect I want to create.

and power,
Attracting like-minded people
and energy,
Building forward momentum
and guidance,
Creating mental abundance
and gratitude,
Opening our hearts
and minds,
Manifesting greater purposes
and intentions.

Intentional words strung together,
or purposefully delivered
in singular fashion,
persuasively create energy
impacting our very core.

We can choose to create
beautiful moments,
confident solutions,
powerful experiences…

When we choose to create,
confidently create at this level,
we are automatically choosing
to positively influence ourselves,
and those around us.

Or we can choose to create
something not positive,
something not hopeful,
something not confident.

Either way,
the choice is ours to make.
