America Recycles Day: But Are We Really Recycling?

America Recycles Day is meant to celebrate progress—but the truth is, the U.S. recycling rate hovers around 32%, and for plastics, it drops to just 5–6%. That’s a far cry from the perception that most of what we toss in the blue bin gets a second life.

The reality is messier. Recycling rules vary wildly from one community to another. What’s accepted in one county might be trash in the next. Sorting confusion leads to contamination. And greenwashing only makes things worse, with labels that make products feel recyclable even when they’re not processed that way.

Recycling isn’t failing because people don’t care—it’s failing because the system is fractured.

Just calling something ‘recyclable’ isn’t enough. Until we invest in clearer labeling, better infrastructure, and national standards, recycling won’t live up to its promise.

What Is TPS? The Most Natural-Looking Bioplastic

TPS stands for thermoplastic starch—a bioplastic made by heating and plasticizing natural starch (typically from corn, potato, or cassava) with water, glycerol, or other plasticizers. The result is a flexible material that looks and feels like plastic, but starts with just... starch.

Unlike most bioplastics, TPS is 100% biobased and can be biodegradable, depending on how it’s formulated. However, pure TPS is sensitive to moisture and heat, so it’s often blended with other polymers (like PBAT or PLA) to improve durability and processing.

TPS is most commonly found in compostable films, bags, food service items, and agricultural products. NuPlastiQ® is a great example of a next-generation TPS that improves performance while staying true to its natural roots.
