πŸ”₯ Reminder Stage I Fire Restrictions in Effect πŸ”₯

The Bureau of Indian Affairs – Southern Ute Agency, Branch of Fire Management, has implemented Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on all trust lands throughout the Southern Ute Indian Reservation due to extremely dry conditions, low winter snowpack, and ongoing hot, windy weather.

Effective Date: May 22, 2026, at 6:00 AM
Status: Remains in effect until further notice

Please be aware of the following restrictions:
🚫 Open Burning: Burning of trash and yard waste is prohibited.
🚫 Agricultural Burning: All forms, including fields, rangeland, debris, slash piles, prescribed burns, and w**d burning, are prohibited.
🚫 Campfires: Only allowed in officially designated or developed campsites. Charcoal grills (in proper containers) and fires for sweat ceremonies are permitted but must be attended at all times and fully extinguished after use.
🚫 Fireworks: Possession and use of all fireworks are strictly prohibited.

These measures are in place to reduce the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires under current drought conditions. Violations may result in penalties under the Southern Ute Indian Criminal Code. For commercial or industrial fire restriction guidance, contact the BIA Fire Office at 575 County Road 517, Ignacio, CO.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado for all of Southwest Colorado (and beyond) today between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Fire restrictions are in effect for the lower zone of the forest (details here:
https://tinyurl.com/SJNF-Stage-1-Prohibitions). You can still have campfires in concrete or metal fire pits or grates in developed forest service campgrounds and recreation areas, and in the upper zone of the forest (including our wilderness areas). But fire danger is rising across the forest so please use caution if you have a fire.

A Red Flag Warning means that should a fire start, it will catch easily and spread rapidly. So, we humbly ask - be careful out there when doing anything that could spark a fire. Mow early in the day when it’s cool. Secure your tow safety chains so they don’t drag. And, as always, drown your campfires until they are cold and dead

Summer break is here, and so is one of the most dangerous times of year for young drivers.

CDOT reports that traffic fatalities among Colorado youth ages 15–20 have increased by 91% over the last decade, reaching 86 lives lost in 2025. The β€œ100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” from Memorial Day to Labor Day, brings more travel, more distractions, and more risk on our roads.

For teens and parents: please slow down, buckle up, put the phone away, avoid distractions, and never drive impaired. A few good habits behind the wheel can make the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

Let’s help make sure summer memories are made safely.

🚩πŸ”₯ Fire Restrictions are always enacted in the City of Durango. Here are some reminders:

With warm, dry conditions continuing across Southwest Colorado, now is a great time to brush up on what is and isn't allowed within Durango city limits.

🏑 Small, attended campfires and charcoal, gas, and pellet grills are allowed on private property when safety requirements are met.
🏞️ Campfires and grills are not allowed in public parks, open space, trails, or other city-managed lands.
🚫 Fireworks, burn barrels, bonfires, and open burns remain prohibited within city limits.

Whether you're grilling in the backyard or enjoying an evening campfire, please use caution:
βœ… Never leave fires or grills unattended
βœ… Turn off grills when not in use
βœ… Fully extinguish and drown campfires before leaving the area

A little extra care goes a long way in helping prevent wildfires and keeping our community safe. πŸŒ²πŸš’

⚠️ These restrictions apply within the City of Durango. Restrictions may differ in La Plata County, National Forests, BLM lands, Tribal lands, and other federal or state-managed lands. Always check local regulations before heading out.
