Can you hear me now? I can tell you no cell carrier could at this location, AT&T gave it a try, so backup Internet for the win. Network RTK everywhere, priceless! Tracking 32 satellites, reported 3D of 3 mm at 23.2 km from CORS..

Last week was on the Oregon coast, this week is dryland wheat fields in the Columbia River basin. Even though it is considerably warmer on the dry side of the state, I much prefer it for work.

Imagine it is 1909, two railroad builders are in a great race to Central Oregon from the Columbia River. The eventual winner was James Hill's Oregon Trunk line on the west bank of the Deschutes River. The loser was E.H. Harriman. Harriman controlled the Union Pacific Railway and the Southern Pacific Railway at the time and was building on the East Bank of the Deschutes River

Today I drove the northern couple of miles on the old railroad bed that was abandoned when Hill won the race. The fills, cuts and so on are still there. I can just imagine what that rail war was like. Lots of stories of from both sides sabotaging each other's work.

In Central Oregon history this was one the grandest engineering and construction feats of the time, finally bringing rail service to Central Oregon long after most other areas of the USA.

As a surveyor I can see the work that went into this route and the difficulty of construction over 100 years ago.

This photo is looking downstream with the active railroad on the left bank and the old grade of the abandoned railroad on the right bank.

A beautiful cold morning to be out surveying, doesn't get any better weather in PNW in January.
