Independence has set neighborhood trick or treating for Saturday, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m

A lit porch is the invitation. A dark porch means keep walking. The useful route is the sidewalk streets and cul de sacs off Madison Pike, not the pike itself. Two hours goes fast once costumes, photos, and a snack are in the mix, so start near the top of the hour and head home when the bags are full.

There is also an earlier free outing. Boos and Brews is Friday, October 9, at Memorial Park, with park trick or treating from 6 to 8 p.m.

This fall, Kentucky residents can replace the a Bradford pear with a native one thanks to University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension. The Kentucky Bradford Pear Bounty asks participants to remove a Bradford pear from their property and photograph the cut tree. Then one of seven Martin-Gatton CAFE Extension offices throughout the state will provide a native tree to replace it.

Community Family Church is preparing to open the doors to a new $21 million sanctuary following approximately three years of construction.

During the Sept. 12 open house, visitors will be able to tour the sanctuary, learn about the church's ministries and receive free food and refreshments.

***FLOCK SAFETY PUBLIC DISCUSSION AUGUST 17, 2026, 7:00 PM, CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS***
The City of Independence will be conducting a public meeting to provide information regarding Flock Safety cameras to the citizens of Independence, as well as to answer any questions and hear comments from Independence citizens. The meeting will take place in City Council Chambers, 5409 Madison Pike, Independence, KY.

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO DISCUSSION OF FLOCK SAFETY CAMERAS AT THE AUGUST 3, 2026 REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING. That meeting will be preceded by a public zoning hearing, which is expected to be lengthy. To ensure fairness to everyone in attendance—and to provide both the zoning matter and the Flock Safety camera discussion the time and attention they deserve—we have decided not to schedule discussion of both issues on the same evening.

We appreciate the interest of Independence citizens in both topics and look forward to hearing public comments when each item can receive the thoughtful consideration it deserves.

Since privacy and Flock cameras are becoming an extremely hot topic right now, we are curious to know if you are aware that the City of Independence has these installed and are tracking every vehicle? Where do you stand on your privacy and the ability of your everyday movements to be tracked by a company not in Independence?

The City of Newport has completed its pilot program evaluating automated license plate reader technology. After carefully considering the pilot's results, feedback from residents and recent developments involving Fourth Amendment protections, Newport has decided not to move forward with a permanent ALPR program.

The City of Independence must now remove any reference to the word rural from their website
