This past week, the KMBC 9 Alert Weather Team took our Weather School presentation on the road!

When weather permits, NewsChopper 9 lands right on the school grounds. Whenever that happens, local firefighters are on site for both the landing and takeoff to help keep everything safe.

Here are three of the dedicated firefighters who joined us during our visit to Santa Fe Trail Elementary School:
Shay K., Ethan A., and Josh L.

Great meeting you all—and thank you for your tireless service to the community. 🚒

A moment to honor those who serve, and to remember those who gave everything.

To every IFD firefighter, past and present: thank you for showing up when it matters most.

Your courage keeps our community safe. Thank you!

This week IFD crews were able to take advantage of a great training opportunity, in the now vacant City Hall building. The training scenario started out as a normal response to an automatic alarm and ended up being a full response for a fire on the third floor with multiple victims throughout the building. All crews were able to participate in this very realistic training, and identify any areas of operation that worked well or needed improvement. A big thank you to MCC Blue River Fire Academy for their participation and for making this scenario as real as possible.

Fire Investigator Jade Israel received the award for dedication at the First Responders' Breakfast, hosted by the Independence Chamber of Commerce.

Investigator Israel was recognized for her actions at a house fire in November 2025, where she took personal responsibility for two children who were home alone with nowhere to go. She provided a safe place for them to stay and provided a meal while they waited for their caregiver to arrive.

Her kind actions went beyond her duties and responsibilities, and exemplify the level of care our members provide for our citizens each and every day.
