Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are helping prepare astronauts for humanity’s return to the Moon.
NASA is using a specialized training course near Gypsum, Colorado, operated by the Colorado Army National Guard, to simulate the challenging conditions astronauts will face during future Artemis lunar landings. The state's high-altitude terrain, rugged mountains, dust, and unpredictable weather provide a realistic environment for practicing lunar landing operations.
The training builds on a long tradition of the American West helping prepare astronauts for lunar exploration and highlights yet another way Colorado is contributing to the nation’s space leadership. As NASA moves closer to landing astronauts on the Moon for the first time since 1972, Colorado is playing a critical role in helping ensure mission success.
