Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are helping prepare astronauts for humanity’s return to the Moon.

NASA is using a specialized training course near Gypsum, Colorado, operated by the Colorado Army National Guard, to simulate the challenging conditions astronauts will face during future Artemis lunar landings. The state's high-altitude terrain, rugged mountains, dust, and unpredictable weather provide a realistic environment for practicing lunar landing operations.

The training builds on a long tradition of the American West helping prepare astronauts for lunar exploration and highlights yet another way Colorado is contributing to the nation’s space leadership. As NASA moves closer to landing astronauts on the Moon for the first time since 1972, Colorado is playing a critical role in helping ensure mission success.

The lunar south pole has similarities to alpine environments in the West, with deep craters, steep slopes and harsh lighting that can create visual illusions.

🚀 🎊 Congratulations, United Launch Alliance (ULA)!

Colorado-based United Launch Alliance (ULA) successfully launched 29 Amazon Project Kuiper LEO satellites on Friday aboard an Atlas V rocket.

The mission marked the 109th Atlas V launch in the rocket's distinguished history. With only eight Atlas V rockets remaining, ULA is preparing to complete the transition to its next-generation Vulcan launch vehicle, which will carry the company into the future of space access.

Congratulations to ULA and the entire Colorado aerospace community on another successful launch.

The Space Force announced Friday that its new operations center at Schriever Space Force Base will bring approximately 2,500 civilian jobs to Colorado. This marks one of the state's largest military-related job gains in years.

The announcement builds on a string of major Space Force wins for Colorado, including the selection of two Space Force Field Commands, two Deltas, and the Officer Training Course, all ahead of the service's expected future expansion.

In addition, the Space Force announced that it will relocate its Infrastructure Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) office from Los Angeles Space Force Base to Peterson Space Force Base.
Taken together, the recent growth of the Space Force in Colorado more than offsets the job losses associated with U.S. Space Command's pending move to Alabama.
