What does a home look like through the eyes of an Occupational Therapist?

When I do a Home Assessment, I’m not just looking for grab bars, rugs, or fall hazards. I’m looking at the person—how they move, how they complete everyday activities, what has changed, and whether their home is still supporting their independence.

Sometimes joy is hiding in the smallest places. Here are 10 simple summer moments worth savoring:

1. Watch a sunrise
2. Pick up a book you've been meaning to read
3. Visit a farmers market
4. Call someone you haven't talked to in a while
5. Sit outside and do absolutely nothing
6. Try a new flavor of ice cream
7. Write down one happy memory

Joy isn't just a nice feeling. Science says it's actually good medicine.

In a landmark study published in Psychosomatic Medicine, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people who regularly experience positive emotions (happiness, calm, and a sense of well-being). They were significantly less likely to get sick when exposed to a cold virus, and reported fewer symptoms when they did. The same research linked positive emotional style to lower cortisol levels and reduced inflammation, two key factors in healthy aging.

Put simply: Having a good time is good for you!

At Senior Helpers, our Companion Care service is built around exactly that idea. Our caregivers get to know each client's personality, interests, and favorite activities. They plan visits around the things that bring them joy. Whether that's a morning walk, a card game, a shared meal, or just good conversation over coffee, we're here to make sure the seniors we care for are living fully, not just safely.

We're midway through summer and there's still time to ask: what do you actually want to do before the season ends?

A bucket list doesn't have to be grand. It can be as simple as eating ice cream on a porch, calling an old friend, or finally visiting that garden down the road. The point is to name the things that bring you joy and make them happen.
