The Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) has become a crisis. Our response to it must be informed, appropriate, and measured. This is by no means our first experience with infectious diseases, not even our first experience with Corona viruses, nor is it our first experience with concerns driven by a voracious news cycle and the Internet where anyone with an IP address can be a publisher.
We are repeatedly exhorted to be worried. I disagree. Worry is not productive. The math surrounding infectious disease generally, and N Corona specifically, supports concern, conscious, deliberate, and measured responses. Just like the Anthrax and powder scares from 1999, 2000, and 2001, SARS (also a Coronavirus) from 2005, MERS from 2006, Swine flu, Ebola from 2014, Zika in 2016, and H1N1 almost every year—we need to understand the biology behind this virus and respond.
All viruses need a host to survive. While they can live in the air and on surfaces for a time, that time is not long. Most viruses like warm, moist parts of the body, especially the lungs. Viruses are transmitted by droplets, typically from sneezes or coughs. They don’t show themselves right away, typically not until a few days after exposure.
Flu viruses typically impact the young, the elderly, the sick, and those who are immune-compromised. N-Corona seems to impact young people less than other forms of the flu (Victoria-B and H1N1 this season). Researchers from around the world are working around the clock to understand this virus and develop a vaccine.
So what should you do?
-If you are sick, stay home
-Cough or sneeze into your sleeve
-Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, thoroughly scrubbing fingers and thumbs.
-Don’t shake hands or touch other people. If you do, wash your hands.
-Clean your phone, tablet, keyboards, computer mouse, surfaces, door k***s, light switches, etc. with soap and water or other disinfectants.
