🌟 It was an absolute pleasure to have been a virtual guest speaker for a 2-hour business etiquette training session with the amazing teachers and administration at St. Joseph Catholic School in Richardson, Texas! It was an honor to share insights on fostering professional excellence and creating a respectful, collaborative environment. I loved it even more because I had the honor of being their virtual speaker exactly a year ago. Their teachers and administration are a supportive team who truly care for one another’s success. The month of May brings gorgeous peonies. They are my favorite flowers and I just received this beautiful bouquet from a student. It’s been raining all day here and what a pleasant surprise at the end of a long teaching day.

Fun fact: Peony is the state flower for Indiana!

I am pleased to share that Empower Etiquette is now offering Children’s Etiquette & Teen Etiquette courses. Summer break is an ideal time to brush up on manners that will affect their social life and family life. I teach modern etiquette (definitely not the cotillion classes we adults had to go through as kids. 😅) For example, for teen etiquette, social media etiquette is a major part of the program. As an educator for over 25 years and a former director of pre-college music programs in universities, I am excited to work with children and teens in this capacity! Both private and group coaching are available.

We humans are going through a lot. So much that sometimes we forget to breathe slowly. We are in the midst of mental health crisis, and our screens are both incredibly convenient and yet, are worsening anxiety issues and problems with loneliness. Pandemic didn’t help at all. Etiquette can be a powerful tool to help us overcome anxiety and fear and reach out for that human connection and know how to be social. Fear and anxiety may still be there, and that’s totally ok. With etiquette, you now know how to be your best self even with fear. First, let’s motivate ourselves to get outside from time to time instead of being in our pajamas watching Netflix every evening. 😉

If you’ve been invited to an Easter dinner, here are some guest etiquette tips to ensure a pleasant celebration for everyone.

Dress appropriately:
Demonstrate your appreciation for the occasion by dressing smartly in attire that reflects the significance of the event. Opt for chic yet comfortable clothing such as dresses with cardigans for warmth, tailored trousers paired with an elegant top, or button-down shirts for men. Avoid overly casual outfits like t-shirts, hoodies, and shorts, unless explicitly indicated otherwise by the host.

To contribute or not:
If you’ve received an invitation to someone’s home for Easter dinner, it’s considerate to inquire whether you can bring a dish. If the host agrees, they may suggest a specific item, or you can offer to prepare a side dish or dessert. If the host declines your offer and reassures you they have everything under control, graciously accept and bring a thoughtful gift instead. A potted plant, flowers that are either in a pot or a vase already or artisanal food items that the host may enjoy later are some ideas.

Arrive on time:
As a guest, demonstrate your respect for the host’s efforts by arriving promptly to make sure food can be served on time.

Tipping Etiquette for using Restaurant Gift Cards 💳 🧾🍽️

It’s important to ensure that when leaving a tip using a gift card, you calculate it based on the original amount of the check, not the remaining balance after using the gift card. For example, if the check is $100 and the gift card covers $80, you would calculate the tip based on the full $100 amount, not just the remaining $20. This ensures proper etiquette and fair compensation for the service provided.

When settling the bill, I would recommend that you inform the server that you’d like to include a tip AND that you’ll be using a gift card for payment. This preemptive communication can help streamline the transaction process, particularly since the establishment’s point-of-sale (POS) system may necessitate specifying the payment method. If your gift card balance is adequate to cover both the total bill and the tip, that’s great. Some restaurants may not allow you to add gratuity on the gift card itself. Regardless, be prepared to supplement with an alternative form of payment to settle the bill completely including the tip.

I grew up in the 90s as a young girl seeing the Lancôme Trésor perfume ad with . My mom had a bottle of it and I most definitely stole a few spritzes. These quotes are from the recent NY Times article in which she was interviewed about aging. I found it to be refreshingly honest and hilarious. She is boldly herself, has take it or leave it kind of attitude, and is completely at ease in her skin and yet is so truthful about being a woman—the total being. Having a partner and not having a partner and how that affects your choices in life such as traveling and going to parties, having kids or not, finding financial freedom, etc. The biggest takeaway for me reading this interview confirmed what I knew already: with aging comes this incredible freedom for us women and we have to consistently choose ourselves over and over even if much of the world is seeking flawless youth. What a privilege it is to experience aging for those of us that are able to do so.
