Effective September 30th, the Social Security Administration’s definition of a “public assistance household” will expand to include households where someone in the house receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments AND households where not everyone living in the house receives public assistance.

This means that if an SSI applicant or recipient is determined to be living in a “public assistance household,” Social Security will assume they are not receiving assistance (in-kind supports) from anyone in the home, which currently may lower SSI payments by 1/3.

The expanded definition will allow more people to qualify for SSI, increase some SSI recipients’ payment amounts, and reduce reporting burdens.
