In this article, Author David Todd McCarty reminds us that sympathy and empathy are sometimes viewed as interchangeable descriptions for the same emotional reaction, yet they are very different. The difference in meaning is often explained with some variation of the following: sympathy is when you share the feelings of another; empathy is when you understand the feelings of another but do not necessarily share them.
