How long have Latinos lived in Indiana? What regions had the highest populations of Latinos early on? What struggles have Latinos encountered as Hoosiers over the decades? So many great topics are discussed in this book by Nicole Martinez-LeGrand and Daniel Gonzales. Every Hoosier needs to read this historical account of Latinos living in Indianapolis.
Personally, my family (Cabello) moved from Saginaw, Michigan to South Bend in 1969. Soon after, my father, Z.R. Cabello, Jr., a pastor of Spanish-speaking churches, hosted the first community radio program targeting Hispanics living in Northern Indiana on WSBT radio in 1970. It was called "Informando Al Pueblo", and was the first Spanish-only radio program to broadcast in South Bend.
This was the beginning of my life as a young Hoosier in Northern Indiana. But, that's my story. This book helps to paint a broader picture of how Hoosier Latinos were struggling, serving and succeeding in Indiana. Get your hands on this book and learn about Indiana.
