THEY NEED YOU MORE THAN YOU NEED THEM.

Your ESTIMATED DUE DATE is not a fixed date, it is not the Word of God, and it should not be treated as such. It is a guess, an educated guess, but a guess.

Most first time mothers will go to 41 weeks.
Most second time mouths will go past 40 weeks.
Your OBs impatience and panic to get your baby birthed has nothing to do with their safety or your best interest (in normal, healthy, low risk moms) and everything to do with their own convenience.

The ARRIVE Trial set out to show that babies had better outcomes when evicted early, having been "saved from pregnancy". What they found? No improvement in outcomes for babies at all. And that's not even the tip of the iceberg because wtf that study could not have been more poorly run if they actually tried.

We know MOMS aren't happier (hello, 1/3 report feeling dissatisfied with their maternity care, 45% report feeling they felt unsafe to express concerns or ask questions), they also aren't healthier (despite spending the most $$ per patient in the US we still rank 52nd in the world for maternal outcomes, expnentially worse for Black mothers), so it ain't for US. We're not exactly killing it atm.

So it's clearly about the hospital. About your doctor wanting to be sure they can be at your birth and bill for it. Nursing managers to be able to ensure adequate staffing and not have nurses hanging around getting paid if there isn't enough work. It's about all the wrong things.

ELECTIVE INDUCTION? JUST SAY NO!

I'M THE LOSER

My the best friends are all crochet masters. They make sweaters and scarves and pot holders and whole ass figurines out of yarn. Every time we're together I'm the loser in the corner NOT making anything because when one friend offered to teach us years ago, I didn't stick with it.

Fast forward to this week and I'm super jelly that my friends are living their best grandma lives at co-op and I'm just on my phone working. So I decide to start again. And guys... I was doing so well!!! A few tips from my buds, and I was 18 rows into a scarf! I was noticing the edges getting really wonky so I decided to start over - and this photo is where I'm at after 90 minutes of "starting over".

So I text in the group chat that I'm over it, and I get a dose of my own medicine:
"Rome wasn't built in a day, Chelsea"
"Keep trying!"
"I still hate starting a project"
My cheerleaders ♡

The irony is that that's my job! I cheerlead women all day every day NOT to give up before they've even begun. I'm out here reminding women that new skills take time to master and can be HARD, but are totally worth the effort. Saying over and over that WE NEVER QUIT ON OUR WORST DAY!
So, I'm not going to quit. That pile of yarn WILL be something useful, and I will go on to make dozens of scarves and potholders and make even a cardigan one day. And YOU will birth and breastfeed and parent that gorgeous baby of yours comfortably and happily and with incredible ease.

We can do hard things, so let's commit and make it happen 💪🏼

MAKE BIRTH NATURAL AGAIN

All the credit for this badass hat goes to GO FOLLOW HER AND SHOW HER LOVE!

Birth is a natural process that SOMETIMES needs medical intervention, but it's treated like a medical emergency in our culture. One way you can prevent unnecessary interventions from sabotaging your birth is to hire a birth doula!

Tell me about YOUR birth! What did you love? What was lacking? Would you do anything differently if you were to have another baby? I could talk birth alllllllllllllll day 💕 grab a cup of coffee (or if you're over 40 and it's past noon where you are) and lets gab!

"WHAT DO YOU DO?"

The easy answer? Birth, b***s, babies, bodywork.

The not so easy answer? I strive to replace the village mothers have lost. I'm the old broad new broads can check in with to find comfort, solutions, validation, and community. I was lucky enough to be sheparded into motherhood by a handful of wise women, and it is my time to pay that forward!

DIFFERENT RULES FOR DIFFERENT MILKS

Wanna know WHY your pediatrician doesn't know the breastfeeding rules? It's because their governing body (AAP in the USA) gets the bulk of it's funding from formula manufacturers. And those formula reps are allowed to sit on medical school boards. And they get to make decisions about what pediatricians are taught. And breastfeeding doesn't make the cut - but they sure know a lot about formula.

Anyhow, HAPPY MONDAY!

NATURE OVER CULTURE!

Not much to add to this. But your baby isnt waking because they have a BEHAVIOR problem - they have no prefrontal cortex it's not INTENTIONAL. They NEED you. They NEED food. They NEED comfort. All of those needs being met consistently while we wait for that neocortex to come online at around the age of FIVE YEARS programs your child to know that they can TRUST YOU. As the mother of a teenager, I can't stress enough just how important that trust is as your baby ages.

Sleeping with your baby, tending to them responsivly DAY AND NIGHT not only keeps them safe and healthy, but also programs them to understand - before they can COMPREHEND - that you are their safe space. There are long term benefits.

There is also ABNORMAL feeding/waking overnight. If you suspect your baby is waking or feeding MORE than they should, not just more than is convenient for you or more than your pediatrician or best friend says they should, then get help! There are multiple physiological causes of unnatural waking that your babies is trying to alert you to. You do not need a "sleep consultant" to encourage you to just ignore their communication.

Babies cant understand the difference between a WANT and a NEED. They literally lack that part of the brain. And while it starts to develop around the age of FIVE - it doesn't complete development until 25. So believe your baby. If they are asking for more of you, more milk, more comfort, more closeness, BELIEVE THEM. And get them some support if your intuition is telling you something else is up.

Who do you n look to for help? So glad you asked.
ME! IBCLC, Baby Led Sleep & Well-Being specialist, and most importantly - mom of 4 who is well through the trenches and seeing just how right she was to parent her babies responsively.

Even when it was inconvenient.
Which was most of the time.

AVOIDING FORMULA IS GOOD.

Ok, now that I've got your attention.

I had the displeasure this past year of running into a number of hospital lactation consultants who were actively trying to convince my clients that they should give their babies formula. Now. Let's be super clear. I was a hospital lactation consultant for nearly a decade - I know how hard that job is. I know the pressure and impossible expectations that one or two women will be able to support breastfeeding mothers and babies on every single unit (oh yeah, I helped lactating minds and babies in L&D, Postpartum, NICU, Peds, ICU, Telemetry, ED, Med-Surg, and through the outpatient clinic). But I want to make it clear that FORMULA IS NOT THE ANSWER.

The are other options, FFS.

Formula is LAZY and DANGEROUS.

Formula is also good for the hospitals bottom line.

HOMEBIRTH DADS

My better half and I are working hard on our passion project: a documentary about dads and their experience with homebirth... the aim of this documentary is to serve as a resource for dads who are uncertain or hesitant about home birth, from dads who have experienced the process firsthand.

We are looking for video footage of homebirth, particularly where dad's presence/facial expressions/support is being highlighted. If you had a homebirth and would be open to sharing your footage with us (we are able to edit the footage to your comfort), please reach out - if you know if someone who had a homebirth who you think might be interested in being a part of our project, please share this post with them!

Let's get this thing MADE and out in the world ♡
