“I needed a mentor and couldn’t find one.”
This was the subject line of an email I received back in May, from a woman I did not know.

Curiosity was soaring so I decided to open the email.

I read the first few lines and…wow! I knew her story all too well.

It was my story.

She spoke about her experience with racism at a previous job. She vowed to start an organization “to ensure that Black girls and gender non-conforming youth have the tools and the mentors they need to get through similar struggles, but without the scars.”

She went on to say how she “brought together a group of talented women who were complete strangers, all united by the shared vision of using targeted mentorship to secure a bright future for Black girls in the city of Los Angeles.”

Ding! Ding! Ding! I was born and raised in LA so I’m now really intrigued.

Subsequent emails were sent and when the email came and asked for mentors…my immediate thought was…sign me up!

The organization is called The Collective Identity Mentoring and the founder and woman who reached out to me is Nicole Lynn.

Nicole is an action-taker, a fighter, a woman with tremendous compassion and has done an awesome job executing her vision.

I am honored to be part of this life-changing non profit organization for Black girls in LA.

Fast forward to last Friday night…I was so excited to sit down and have a deep conversation with my mentee, Mika Hagos. Mika is a freshman at USC majoring in International Business.

Mika’s brain was filled with questions about decisions she’s been mulling over. I could tell she’s a thinker like me.

I’m sure Mika will accomplish amazing goals while in school and beyond, and I look forward to guiding her along the way.

As I close out this now rather lengthy post, I want to encourage you to be that guiding light for those that are just starting their educational and career journey. You have so much to offer and I bet you’ll learn a great deal about yourself along the way.

How I see it…there’s absolutely no reason why someone should have to say, “ I needed a mentor but couldn’t find one.”

As I sit here and think about the past week or so, I realize I've been hearing a great deal about competition. From March Madness, to the end of the NBA season winding down, to just being in that business environment.

The way I look at it...competition is a good thing. Without competition, we would not be pushed to do things even better than the other guy. And...if there was no competition, then that would mean there's no demand for your product or service. Just something to think about as we start a new week.

Drumrolls please...last but definitely not least...what are the life goals or outcomes in life your target audience is trying to reach? Marriage? Lose weight? And how does your product or service help them achieve these goals?

Keep in mind...the 5 facts I presented this past week are not the end all be all. There are certainly other facts you can know about your target audience such as their favorite type of music, and their favorite foods, etc. I just want to get you thinking and dig a little deeper into their interests. Bottom line, if you don't know the interests of your audience, you won't know where to find them.

Thoughtful Thursday:
When I first started my marketing career, marketing was all about pushing your products or services onto the customer. What companies said about their product, customers automatically accepted. Not anymore.

Now, with social media, customers have a voice. The companies that listen to their customers and act accordingly...those companies will rise to the top. Something to think about.
