Casey and Mitch McPherson of Gurnee Mechanical put Ionia Innovators to the test during their recent 10-minute presentation—with an HVAC quiz!

Most of the questions covered things the average homeowner might reasonably know about heating and cooling systems. A couple were a little more challenging. We’re happy to report that the group passed the test... more or less. 😄

The real value came as Casey and Mitch explained the answers along the way, giving us a better understanding of the systems that keep our homes and businesses comfortable.

One of the benefits of Ionia Innovators is having members who are experts in fields they genuinely enjoy—and who are willing to share some of that knowledge with the rest of us. Thanks to Casey and Mitch for a fun and informative presentation!

Mike Terranova, owner of All Seasons Insurance, recently shared the story behind his career in the insurance industry—and it’s one built on years of experience from the ground up.

With a college degree in insurance, Mike began his career at another agency, where he worked in every position before eventually purchasing the business himself. After later selling that agency, he returned to the insurance industry five years later when he purchased All Seasons Insurance from a dear friend and former Ionia Innovators member.

Since then, Mike has built a strong team around him and continues to grow the business. Most recently, he purchased a second insurance agency, which has now been rebranded as All Seasons Insurance’s second location.

It was a great reminder that behind every local business is a story—and often many years of experience, relationships, and hard work that brought it to where it is today.

Samantha Ringler of Edward Jones Investments recently spoke to Ionia Innovators, reviewing several current headlines and providing some helpful context based on information and guidance from Edward Jones.

One thing that always stands out when Samantha speaks is her commitment to education. She wants her clients to understand the information available to them so they can make informed decisions based on their own circumstances and goals.

As the only female financial advisor in the Ionia area, Samantha brings both knowledge and dedication to the people she serves—and we always appreciate the perspective she shares with our group.

What is Ionia Innovators?

Ionia Innovators is a local business alliance built around relationships, referrals, and helping one another succeed.

Our members represent a wide variety of businesses and organizations throughout the area. By meeting regularly, we learn about each other’s work, build trust, exchange referrals, and become better equipped to connect people in our community with businesses we know and recommend.

It’s about more than exchanging business cards. It’s about knowing the people behind local businesses and creating relationships that help all of us grow.

Over the next few months, we’ll share a little more about how Ionia Innovators works and the impact those relationships can have.

John Murray of JBM Lawncare gave Ionia Innovators a lesson in what goes on beneath the surface of a healthy lawn.

John explained how different soil and grass types work together and why the same approach won't necessarily produce the same results from one property to another. He also discussed the role our local climate and changing weather conditions play in lawn health and how understanding those factors can help determine the best approach for maintaining a property.

A great-looking lawn isn't just about mowing and watering—it takes knowledge of what you're growing, what it's growing in, and how to give it what it needs.

With more than 25 years in business, Darrell Ockert of OC Construction & Garage Doors knows that quality work is only part of building a successful company. His presentation focused on the importance of great service, earning customers’ trust, and running a business efficiently.

Darrell and his crew handle everything from garage door maintenance and repair to decks, renovations, and construction projects of all sizes. Behind the scenes, he continues to evaluate how the business operates, recently making strategic decisions about staffing and equipment purchases that have allowed the company to take on more work while keeping overhead under control.

It’s always interesting to hear not only what an experienced business owner does, but how he continues adapting the business after more than two decades.

Zakk Fell of Rhythmix Coatings is another new member of Ionia Innovators, and his presentation introduced us to the possibilities of custom epoxy coatings.

Zakk works with floors, walls, countertops, showers, and other surfaces using professional-grade products designed to provide greater durability and longer life with less maintenance than typical consumer epoxy products. The initial investment may be higher, but the quality and longevity make the difference.

He showed us some beautiful examples, including a countertop finished to mimic the look of natural stone, along with bathroom floors and shower walls. His coatings can meet demanding requirements for commercial and industrial applications while also delivering the polished appearance homeowners are looking for.

Peter Baak of BC Power and Light gave his first 10-minute presentation as a new member of Ionia Innovators, introducing us to both his business and the path that brought him there.

Peter is an electrician specializing in industrial electrical work. One of his featured services is the repair and installation of exterior business signs. With the equipment needed to reach signs mounted on tall poles and rooftops, he can tackle jobs that aren't always easy to access.

Peter is also an Army veteran. After completing his military service, he set a goal of becoming an electrician and worked to make it happen. Now he’s taken the next step by launching his own business, and we’re glad to welcome him to Ionia Innovators!

Ryan Wilson of the Ionia County Economic Alliance joined Ionia Innovators as a special guest speaker to introduce the group to MIPitch, a locally operated grant program supporting businesses in Ionia and Montcalm counties.

Business owners apply for grants that can help them take the next step in growing their companies. What makes MIPitch especially interesting is how the grant fund is built: funds raised from advertisers go directly into the grant pool, while the Ionia County Economic Alliance and local chambers of commerce sponsor the costs associated with the event.

Applications for the current round have closed, but MIPitch is still welcoming additional advertisers who would like to help increase the amount available to local businesses. In addition to supporting worthy entrepreneurs locally, advertisers benefit from social media promotion surrounding the program.

The MIPitch finals (and a fantastic networking event) are scheduled for September 17 starting at 4:00pm at the Candlestone Inn.

Roger Kammers of Hamblin Body Shop shared a new option that could make an unexpected repair a little easier to manage.

Through Carwise, customers can apply online to finance the deductible required by their insurance company, with 0% interest for three months. The application process is quick, and Roger is excited to have another way to help customers get their vehicles repaired and back on the road without the full deductible becoming an immediate financial burden.

It’s another example of a local business looking for ways to make a stressful situation a little easier for its customers.
