Perception

Not everyone will build a startup. But everyone can invest in one. And that is where the real gap is. Because many people see startups as risky… yet remain comfortable with a system that is equally uncertain. Your 8–5 job is not risk-free. It is simply a familiar risk.

The deeper issue is not access. It is perception. The inability to see the value of investing in small, local ventures… to participate in building something early…
to share in growth before it becomes obvious. MJ DeMarco calls this financial mediocrity. A system that conditions people to: avoid risk, lower expectations and settle for delayed outcomes.

A path he describes as
“Live poor, die rich.”

But here is the paradox: The same people who avoid startup risk often embrace slow systems that quietly erode their potential.
Because it feels safer, because it is familiar., and Because no one questions it.

The truth is simple:
You don’t have to build to participate.
But you do have to see differently.

Vision and the Discipline of Blur

We often describe vision as a mental picture of what we hope to become. That is true. But what we rarely say is this:
Vision is not only about what you choose to see.

It is also about what you intentionally choose to blur. In photography, there is a concept called depth of field — the distance between the closest and farthest objects that appear sharp.

Everything else?

Blurred. Out of focus. Ignored. That is how a powerful image is made.

Most startup founders are told:

Have a big vision
Be open to opportunities
Listen to feedback
Stay flexible

All good advice.

But without the discipline of depth of field, this becomes dangerous. Because the founder begins to see:

Too many opportunities
Too many suggestions
Too many possible directions
Too many urgent distractions

And soon, the vision is no longer sharp. It is crowded.

Not because they don’t know their vision.
But because they never learned: What must be ignored in order for the vision to stay in focus.

They never learned the art of blur.
Vision Requires Selective Blindness
Every serious founder must decide:

What conversations to ignore
What markets not to chase
What features not to build
What people not to please
What noise not to entertain
This is not stubbornness.
This is focus.

The Photography Lesson for Founders

A photographer does not try to make everything sharp.
That would ruin the image. A founder must do the same. Keep the vision sharp. Let everything else blur.
Because Many startups fail not from lack of vision, but from lack of depth of field.

They try to focus on everything — and end up focusing on nothing.

"Vision is not just clarity of sight.
It is the discipline of blur."

Rewriting the Story of Capital

There is a part of financial history we rarely talk about.

Many of the oldest and most powerful endowments in Europe and America — universities, churches, banks, and foundations — were seeded during the same centuries that Africa was being emptied of people and possibility through slavery and colonial extraction. Was it the plantation wealth, slave trade profits or the colonial monopolies.

These did not only build ports and palaces.
They built permanent funds —Endowments.
Money that would never be spent — only invested. Capital that would grow for centuries. Institutions that would never run dry.

The tragedy is not only that Africa was exploited. It is that the wealth extracted from African bodies and lands became the foundation of lasting capital elsewhere, while Africa was left with the memory of loss and the habit of dependence.

So today, the narrative has flipped in a painful way:

Africa is seen as a place that needs aid.
The West is seen as the place that has capital.

But history tells a different story.
Africa was once the source of capital.
Just not the keeper of it.

This is why the aid model often feels insufficient, even insulting.
Aid assumes Africa has never known capital formation.
Aid treats Africa as if it has no history of financing the world.
But the problem was never Africa’s inability to create wealth.
The problem was that the wealth created here never stayed here.
It became endowments elsewhere.

Startup Ripple begins from a quiet but radical idea: What if we could build endowments from African creation, not African extraction?

What if instead of: Donations that are spent, Grants that disappear, and funding that breeds dependence; instead we built a system where:

Savings become capital
Capital becomes enterprise
Enterprise becomes returns
Returns become permanent funding for impact—That is endowment thinking.

Startup Ripple is building that ecosystem!

Money behaves like nature.
It does not appear out of nowhere.
It grows from seeds.
And savings is that seed.
For most startups, the obsession with “who will give me money to start” is precisely why invested funds disappear without creating lasting value. When money arrives without sacrifice, it is often treated without respect. It becomes spending, not capital.
But when a founder has learned to save — truly save — they have already mastered the first and hardest form of entrepreneurship: delayed gratification.
