It's been too long since our last
Lets talk about what to do in preparation of a service call. There are a few instances where I walk into a house, and the homeowner is trying their best to be helpful, but really it is delaying diagnosis or skewing the result. Here are some things you can do to best prepare for a service call:
Noise- Appliance repair requires all 5 senses, including hearing. Don't schedule an appointment during band practice (yes this happens), renovations, etc.
DIY attempted- I cannot effectively diagnose if the appliance is in pieces. If you take it apart, put it all the way back together. The appliance should be in an operable state (less the reason I am there) at the time of your service. Time spent reassembling an appliance may affect your price.
In use on arrival -Don't have a load in the washer/dryer/dishwasher going already as I arrive. Don't have the oven hot as I get there. I know the intention is to make the thing do the thing while I am there. There are diagnostic methods I use to troubleshoot appliances quickly, I may not need a real world example.
Fridges/Freezers- Do not unplug/defrost. Even if you had to empty the contents due to poor cooling, there are temperature and data points to collect and they only tell the whole story if observed during normal operation. If the fridge is completely out of use and you have had it unplugged, plug it back in the day before your appointment. Try not to open the doors 1 hour before your scheduled service, this can skew temperature measurements.
Clutter- Clear off and around the appliance I am there to service. Usually a panel or two is going to come off or the unit needs to be moved. Space for myself, my tools, and various panels/parts makes for a safe and efficient work environment.
I know this tip feels like a list to make my life easier, and these things certainly do. The goal is to make for proper diagnosis and timely repairs. I know some of the above may not always be possible or I might advise differently based on our conversation during scheduling.
