Our name is a small promise we try to keep every day. 🤝

In Japanese, “hito” means “person.”

That’s exactly the role we play for the companies we work with. Not a replacement for anyone already on your team. Another person in the room.

Your CPA keeps handling the filings. We sit down with your engineers, scientists, and operators and do the slow, careful work of understanding what they actually built, then make sure it’s documented and claimed right.

One client first got to know us through a problem that wasn’t ours to solve. Their employees needed help with personal tax questions, so we found them someone we trust.

Later, once we were working on their credits, we didn’t just hand over a finished claim. We trained their accounting team so the knowledge stays with them.

A specialist who replaces your team is one more thing to manage. A specialist who joins is how the work gets better.

If you’d like to meet the people who’d actually be working on your claim, we’d love to say hello.

Starting with the 2026 tax year, claiming the federal R&D credit takes a lot more than a single total. 📅

Form 6765 now includes Section G, and for most larger filers it's mandatory. Expenses have to be reported by business component, with wages split into research, supervision, and support.

That's the kind of detail many companies only pulled together if an audit came. Now it goes on the return.

The timing is what matters. 2026 is about three-quarters done, and a simple monthly time allocation per engineer, captured now, is far stronger than a year-end estimate.

Reconstructing a full year of project data next March is slow, expensive, and harder to defend.

The cheapest time to prepare for Section G is before the year ends.

We put together a year-end guide: who's in scope, what Section G asks for, and a checklist your team and your CPA can work through before January. Link in the comments.

"Our work isn't innovative enough for the R&D credit."

It's the myth we hear most, and it keeps a lot of companies from ever checking.

Your work doesn't have to be new to the world. Improving your own product or process can count, as long as your team is solving a technical problem along the way.

We put together a short eligibility guide for founders and finance leaders who've always wondered but never had time to look.

Inside:
A quick self-check
The four things the IRS looks for, in plain English
What qualifying work looks like across six industries
Three myths that keep companies from claiming

If you answer yes to any item on the checklist, it's worth a closer look.

Swipe through the guide below. Still not sure? That's what our complimentary assessment is for.

California changed its R&D credit rules, and most of the changes won't announce themselves on your return.

📅 Three things to know before October 15:

The old Alternative Incremental Credit is gone. Former users must actively elect a new method on their original 2025 return.

The new California ASC is only 3%. In our example, the regular credit produced $150,000 vs. $33,500 for the same company.

A temporary $5M cap limits how much in business credits you can use each year through 2026.

Our 2026 guide walks through all of it, plus which remote work counts and how to claim on FTB 3523: https://hubs.ly/Q04z4Zcc0

Some people prepare the credit claim. We're looking for someone who can defend it. 🔍

HITO is hiring a Senior Tax Associate.

You'll help innovative companies qualify for R&D credits and incentives, review workpapers and technical memos, and take the lead when an IRS or state audit comes in.

It's also an ownership seat. You'll manage client projects from kickoff to final deliverable and help shape the systems we use to get the work right.

A credit is only as good as the documentation behind it.

The short version: 4–6+ years of US tax experience with R&D credits and incentives, plus real IRS or state audit experience. CPA, EA, or JD is a plus. Fully remote, US-based.

Back2KC wrapped Friday, and there's something different about a room full of people who chose to come back and build here. 🏟️

Conversations ranged from AI in the heartland to what's really changing in Kansas City's economy, but the thread running through all of it was the same: people building something real, and looking for the right support to do it.

One thing that came up more than once: a lot of growing companies in KC are eligible for R&D credits and state incentives they've never looked into. If that's you and we connected Friday, reach out to Lindsey, happy to take a free look.

Thanks to Social Balances for putting together a great homecoming.

Quick question for digital health founders: is your team's product work, AI model development, EHR integrations, clinical algorithm builds, actually being tracked as R&D? 🧬

Most teams write it off as regular engineering cost. The IRS often disagrees, and that gap is usually worth six figures.

We'll be at Digital Health Day this Thursday, August 20. If that question made you pause, let's talk. Our team's Lindsey Presley will be there all day.

Send a connection request, we'll find time on-site.
