📡 Before cell towers, there were microwave towers.

On this day in history, August 17, 1951, AT&T completed the first coast-to-coast phone call carried by radio waves instead of traditional wire or cable.

The system relied on 107 microwave relay towers stretching across the United States, creating what was then the world's longest microwave radio network. Just weeks later, the same network helped deliver America's first transcontinental television broadcast.

Long before smartphones, mobile apps, and cloud communications, innovators were already finding new ways to connect people across vast distances.
