When should you have a mammogram? ๐Ÿ’—

American Cancer Society guidance for women at average risk:

๐Ÿฉท 40โ€“44 โ€” you have the option to start annual mammograms ๐Ÿฉท 45โ€“54 โ€” a mammogram every year ๐Ÿฉท 55+ โ€” every other year, or keep going annually

Screening should continue as long as you are in good health and expected to live at least another 10 years.

If you have a family history, a known genetic risk, or dense breast tissue, your schedule may be different โ€” that is a conversation to have with your doctor.

Mammograms find things that hands cannot. Nothing replaces them.

Breast cancer is becoming more common โ€” and fastest in younger women ๐Ÿ’—

In the U.S., new diagnoses have been climbing since the mid-2000s. Between 2013 and 2022:

๐Ÿ“ˆ Women under 50 โ€” up about 1.4% per year ๐Ÿ“ˆ Women 50 and over โ€” up about 0.7% per year

Half of women diagnosed are 62 or younger. About 1 in 10 new cases is in a woman under 45.

Many of those women are below routine mammogram age, or just starting. Which is exactly why knowing your own normal matters โ€” it is the part that works before screening begins.

What does "breast self-awareness" actually mean? ๐Ÿ’—

It is simpler than people expect. Four things:

โœ”๏ธ Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel โœ”๏ธ Noticing when something changes โœ”๏ธ Telling your doctor about changes without waiting โœ”๏ธ Keeping your scheduled mammograms

That is it. No set technique. No date circled on the calendar. No worrying about whether you are "doing it right."

And here is the important part: this supports your screening. It does not replace it. Mammograms find things that hands cannot. Awareness is what covers the time in between.

Breast cancer is a global story ๐Ÿ’—

In 2022, around 2.3 million women worldwide were diagnosed with breast cancer. About 670,000 died from it.

It is the most common cancer among women anywhere in the world โ€” and researchers project that by 2050, cases could reach 3.2 million a year.

Put another way: every minute, four women somewhere in the world are told they have breast cancer.

Awareness month is mostly a Western tradition. The disease is not that selective.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’—

About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. This year alone, an estimated 321,910 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

All month we will be sharing what the evidence says โ€” and one idea runs through all of it: knowing what is normal for you.

Not a technique. Not a monthly ritual you have to get right. Just familiarity. Knowing how your breasts usually look and feel, so that if something changes, you notice โ€” and you tell your doctor.

That awareness sits alongside your mammograms. It does not replace them.

Four common beliefs about prostate cancer โ€” and what the evidence actually says ๐Ÿ’™

โŒ "I'd know if something was wrong." โœ… Early prostate cancer usually has no symptoms at all.

โŒ "It only happens to much older men." โœ… Average age at diagnosis is around 67 โ€” but advanced cases are rising in men in their 50s, and even under 55.

โŒ "A high PSA means cancer." โœ… PSA can rise from an enlarged prostate, inflammation, or simply age.

โŒ "It's slow-growing, so it doesn't really matter." โœ… Many cases are slow. Some are not. Around 36,320 American men are expected to die from it this year.

Prostate cancer is a global story ๐Ÿ’™

Around 1.47 million men worldwide were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022. About 397,000 died from it.

It is the second most common cancer in men globally โ€” and researchers project worldwide cases will reach roughly 2.4 million a year by 2040.

Much of that increase comes down to demographics: more men living longer, in more places. But the ability to detect the disease early is not spread evenly across those places.

Awareness month is observed mostly in North America and Europe. The disease is not that selective.

What does PSA actually mean? ๐Ÿ’™

PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen. It is a protein made by the prostate gland, and a small amount normally circulates in the blood.

When the level goes up, it means more of that protein is getting into the bloodstream than expected.

Here is the important part: PSA is specific to the prostate, not to cancer. Levels can rise because of prostate cancer โ€” but also because of an enlarged prostate, inflammation, infection, or simply getting older.

So an elevated PSA is not a diagnosis. It is a reason to look closer.

Something in the prostate cancer data is moving in the wrong direction ๐Ÿ’™

Between 2003 and 2017, the share of prostate cancers first diagnosed after they had already spread doubled โ€” from 4% of cases to 8%.

More recent figures show advanced-stage diagnoses climbing about 6% every year in men over 55.

At the same time, the long decline in prostate cancer death rates has slowed and largely flattened.

More men are being diagnosed at the stage where the disease is hardest to treat. That is the trend worth talking about this month.
