Quick work when every second matters.

OCFA Division 1 crews from Battalion 11, Engine 80 and Truck 81 responded to a serious traffic collision in Garden Grove involving a solo vehicle with the driver trapped inside and critically injured.

Our firefighters went to work immediately, using their extrication tools to get the driver out of the vehicle. In less than 15 minutes, the driver was freed and turned over to OCFA paramedics for continued care.

This is exactly why we train for these calls. When someone is trapped and badly hurt, there’s no time to waste.

A reminder to everyone behind the wheel: slow down, stay focused, put the phone away and always wear your seatbelt. A few simple choices can make all the difference when things go wrong.

Trapped after a crash on the 22. 🚒🚨

OCFA Division 1 crews responded to a serious traffic collision on the 22 Freeway where a woman was trapped inside her badly damaged vehicle.

Firefighters went to work quickly, using the Jaws of Life to cut through the vehicle and carefully extricate her from the wreckage.
She was safely removed from the vehicle and turned over to OCFA paramedics for further medical care and transport to a trauma center hospital.

A good reminder for all of us: buckle up, stay focused behind the wheel, and give yourself plenty of space. One moment on the freeway can change everything.

A well-deserved recognition today for OCFA Assistant Chief Baryic Hunter as the Orange County Board of Supervisors honored him ahead of his retirement.

Chief Hunter has been a great leader for OCFA North Operations and a steady presence for the men and women of OCFA, including here in Division 1. His experience, leadership, and friendship will be missed.

Congratulations, Chief Hunter, on a great career and a well-earned retirement. Thanks for everything you’ve done for OCFA and the communities we serve. Enjoy the next chapter, you’ve earned it!

Recently, the OCFA and the Garden Grove Animal Care Services Department teamed up to rescue a four-legged feline friend in need! 🐾🐱

Residents contacted Garden Grove Animal Services after discovering a kitten trapped inside a small hole in a brick wall. After assessing the situation and attempting to safely free the kitten with their own tools, Animal Services called us for some extra help.

With the homeowner’s permission, firefighters opened a section of the wall and successfully freed the furry friend! Thanks to the quick actions of our residents and the teamwork between Animal Care Services and the OCFA, the kitten made it out safely.

A purr-fect example of what can happen when our community comes together! 🐾

Thank you to everyone in Garden Grove, Seal Beach, and Westminster who came out and spent the evening with us! We’re grateful for the opportunity to meet with our neighbors, answer questions, and share what we do to help keep our communities safe. ❤️

Quick knockdown, big save 🔥🚒

OCFA crews from Battalion 1 and Battalion 11 made quick work of a fully involved shed fire in Garden Grove that was threatening two units of a duplex.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the exterior fire, then located fire in the attic of one of the units. Crews moved fast, extinguished the attic fire, and stopped it from spreading further, saving the residence from what could have been a much larger loss.

Great work by our crews getting the fire under control and protecting the homes next door.

🔥 A quick reminder about lithium-ion batteries: Charge them on a hard, non-combustible surface, use the manufacturer-approved charger, keep them away from anything that can burn, and never charge damaged or swollen batteries. Don’t leave them charging while you’re asleep or away from home.

A busy scene on the freeway the other night for OCFA Division 1 crews.

Crews arrived on scene of a traffic accident to find one vehicle fully involved in fire while occupants were trapped in another vehicle involved in the crash. Firefighters immediately went to work on both problems, stretching lines, knocking down the fire, and working to free those trapped.

These calls are a good reminder that things can change in seconds on the freeway. Slow down, stay focused, give emergency crews room to work, and never drive distracted. If you come upon an accident, move over when possible and follow the directions of emergency personnel.

Please drive safe. Someone’s waiting for you to get home. 🚒

Be ready before a fire breaks out!

✅ Use a Multipurpose (ABC) Extinguisher
• A – Wood, cloth, paper
• B – Flammable liquids (grease/oil, gasoline)
• C – Energized electrical equipment

🚨 Before You Use It
• Alert others & call 9-1-1
• Only use on small, contained fires
• Have a clear escape route

Sweep side to side until the fire is out

🔧 Maintenance Tips
• Store in view & out of reach of kids
• Check monthly for damage

🔥 Welcome home, Chief Covey!

After nearly 3,000 miles and 19 days away, Division 1 Chief Craig Covey is back home after serving with California Complex Incident Management Team 2 in Washington.

Chief Covey was assigned to the Operations Section, helping lead the strategy and tactics for firefighters working the Little Giant Fire near Lake Wenatchee. The fire was burning in some of the most challenging terrain in the Pacific Northwest, including areas ranked #1 and #6 forest in the country for suppression difficulty.

Assignments like this take firefighters and fire officers away from their families and departments for weeks at a time, but they are an important part of how the fire service supports communities well beyond our own backyard.

We’re proud of Chief Covey and all the OCFA and California firefighters who travel across state lines to help communities facing difficult fires. When Washington needs help, we’re glad to be there.

🔥 Great work by our Garden Grove crews!

Early on the morning of the 9th, OCFA firefighters responded to a residential structure fire in Garden Grove. Crews arrived to find a working fire in the garage and went to work quickly.

The fire was knocked down in just 11 minutes, keeping the damage contained and, most importantly, saving the home.

Two residents were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Great job by our firefighters getting on scene, making an aggressive attack, and stopping this fire before it could cause much more damage. This is exactly what our crews train for every day. 🚒💪
