A liquid filter bag needs a clean, correctly fitted restrainer basket—not only the right media and micron rating.

Before blaming the filter bag for short life, deformation or unstable differential pressure, review five support-basket details:

• Size and depth — confirm the basket matches the housing and filter-bag size, and supports the bag over its full length
• Open area — inspect perforations or mesh for dried solids, coating, scale or other blockage that can restrict flow
• Smooth surface — check for burrs, sharp edges, damaged welds, dents or deformation that could abrade the bag
• Seal alignment — verify the basket, bag ring, sealing ledge and hold-down components are clean, centered and correctly seated
• Cleanliness and corrosion — remove compatible process residue and inspect for pitting, cracking or material damage before reuse

At installation, make sure the filter bag is fully inside the basket and the top seal lies flat. During startup, follow the housing manufacturer's filling and venting procedure and open valves gradually.

Do not diagnose from differential pressure alone. Compare it with flow rate, viscosity, solids loading, processed volume and changeout history.

Isolate, depressurize and drain the housing according to the approved site procedure before opening or servicing it.

Polyester or polypropylene for a liquid filter bag?

The material name alone does not settle the selection. Before requesting an application review or quotation, confirm:

• Liquid chemistry, concentration and additives
• Normal, peak and cleaning temperature
• Contact time and operating conditions
• Solids type, loading and required micron rating
• Felt or mesh construction
• Seam, ring and sealing details
• Housing and support-basket dimensions

Neither material is universally better. Suitability can change with the complete process condition, filter-bag construction and housing design.

For application support, send the operating details, current bag specification, housing information, photos and required quantity:

The seam in a liquid filter bag is part of the filtration system—not just a manufacturing detail.

Sewn and welded seams can both be suitable when they match the filter media, finished-bag construction, and operating conditions. One is not automatically better.

Before specifying the seam, review:

• Filter media — felt or mesh, polymer, weight, finish, and whether the material can be welded
• Fluid chemistry — compatibility of the media, sewing thread, seal materials, and welded joint
• Temperature — normal and peak operation, including cleaning or sanitizing cycles
• Flow and differential pressure — confirm the expected range and stay within the housing manufacturer's limits
• Retention requirement — clarify the micron rating, test basis, efficiency target, and risk of bypass
• Finished-bag construction — top ring or fl**ge, bottom style, seam overlap or joint, dimensions, and housing fit
• Validation — ask how the finished seam is inspected or tested and whether comparable application history is available

A sewn seam depends on compatible thread, stitch pattern, overlap, and workmanship. A welded seam removes the stitch line, but the media must be thermally weldable and the bond still needs consistent strength and chemical/temperature compatibility.

Evaluate the complete bag and housing—not the seam label alone.

Isolate and depressurize the housing according to site procedures before inspecting or replacing filter bags.

A higher differential pressure across a liquid bag filter does not always mean the filter bag is clogged or defective.

Liquid viscosity can rise sharply as product temperature falls. If cold-start conditions differ from steady operation, the same filter bag may show a very different pressure drop.

Before changing bags, compare five operating inputs:

• Product temperature — record the actual temperature at the filter housing, not only the tank or upstream setpoint
• Startup vs. steady state — separate cold-start readings from stable production data
• Pump speed and flow rate — verify that a change in output or valve position has not increased hydraulic loading
• Solids loading — compare the product, batch, contamination level and processed volume
• Clean-bag baseline — establish the normal differential pressure for a new bag under matched operating conditions

Record inlet and outlet pressure together with temperature, flow rate, product or batch, and processed volume. Compare data at the same operating conditions and verify that the gauges and impulse lines are functioning correctly.

Always stay within the housing manufacturer's pressure and temperature limits. Isolate and depressurize the system according to site procedures before opening the housing.

The liquid filter bag media can be correct while the top ring or seal still does not match the housing.

Before ordering replacement bags, confirm five details:

• Housing brand, model or drawing — use the actual housing specification, not an assumed standard
• Bag size and dimensions — confirm diameter, length, collar depth and nominal size
• Ring or fl**ge style — identify the required snap ring, molded fl**ge, sewn ring or supplier-specific construction
• Seal material compatibility — match the seal to fluid chemistry, temperature and operating conditions
• Basket and lid engagement — verify basket support, hold-down contact, sealing compression and closure clearance

A photo alone may not show groove geometry, collar height, gasket compression or a proprietary fl**ge profile. When possible, provide the housing nameplate, manufacturer, model, drawing and measured dimensions.

Also confirm the filtration target, micron rating, filter media, flow, pressure, temperature, viscosity, solids load and quantity.

Isolate and depressurize the housing according to site procedures before measuring or removing components.

A deformed or collapsed liquid filter bag does not automatically mean the filter media is defective.

Before replacing the bag, isolate and depressurize the housing according to the site safety procedure, then review five system conditions:

• Support basket condition — confirm the basket is installed, correctly seated, undamaged and able to support the full bag
• Differential pressure — review the operating trend and any high-pressure event before the deformation was found
• Bag size and fit — verify bag length, diameter, ring style and compatibility with the housing and basket
• Reverse flow and backpressure — check shutdown, valve sequencing, pump behavior and any flow reversal that could pull or fold the bag
• Installation and sealing — inspect bag seating, top-ring engagement, lid closure and handling damage

Also compare the finding with flow rate, viscosity, solids loading, temperature, operating pressure and changeout history. A useful diagnosis connects the bag condition to the housing, basket, piping and operating sequence—not one symptom alone.

Cloudy filtrate after a liquid filter bag change does not automatically mean the filter media has failed.

Before changing the material or micron rating, check five points:

• Top ring and seal — confirm the ring style, seating and housing sealing surface
• Support basket — verify full support, alignment and freedom from damage
• Bag condition — inspect the seam, fabric and handling areas for punctures or tears
• Retention basis — confirm whether the stated micron rating is nominal or absolute and how it was tested
• System cleanliness — review startup residue, piping, housing and downstream contamination sources

Also compare the result with flow rate, differential pressure, fluid properties and solids data. A clear diagnosis should connect the bag, housing and process—not rely on one observation alone.

Liquid filter bag bypass is not always a filter-media problem.

Before startup, check four sealing points:

• Top ring — confirm the ring style matches the housing seal
• Support basket — make sure the bag is fully supported and the basket is not damaged
• Lid and O-ring — inspect sealing surfaces, gasket condition and closure
• Differential pressure — avoid conditions that can deform the bag or open a bypass path

Even the correct filter media cannot perform as intended if unfiltered liquid can travel around the bag. For a new installation or replacement, confirm the housing model, basket condition, bag dimensions, ring style, seal material, operating pressure and liquid chemistry.

Felt and mesh liquid filter bags can carry the same micron label, but their structures and filtration behavior are different.

Felt media is generally used for depth-loading filtration, where particles can be captured through the thickness of the media. Mesh media generally retains particles closer to the surface and may suit applications where defined openings, surface collection, or cleaning and reuse are required.

Before selecting either construction, confirm:

• liquid chemistry and concentration
• normal, peak, and cleaning temperature
• viscosity and flow rate
• solids type, shape, and loading
• target retention and downstream requirements
• cleaning or reuse expectations
• bag dimensions, ring style, housing, and sealing

Match the media structure to the complete process condition—not only the micron number.
