Friday of the Second Week of Lent
Prayer
Almighty and Eternal God, You bring together a people, gathered from all the nations, to be Your own. We believe Your Son to be the cornerstone of our salvation. Grant us the resolve to run forth to meet Him with righteous deeds, so that we may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom. Keep the Church faithful to its mission. May it be a leaven in the world, renewing us in Christ and transforming us into Your family. Scripture Quote
Matthew 21:42

Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes’.”
Reflection
Jesus is quoting Psalm 118 which was most likely written by, or at least about, His ancestor King David. This verse is precognition of Jesus as the Messiah to come, Jesus’ own crucifixion and Resurrection, transmuted into the building of the Christian church.

Psalm 118 is the final prayer song in the liturgy of the Passover feast,

celebrating the time when the Israelites were freed from Egypt. Three hundred years later, in King David’s time, the people of Israel were rejected by other nations. But God made them to be the cornerstone of His plan for the salvation of the world. One thousand years after King David, his descendant Jesus became the new cornerstone.

Monday of the First Week of Lent
Prayer
Heavenly Father, from whom all good things come, Your Son said to care for the poor so that we can have treasure in heaven. Help us to let go of our earthly possessions and trust in Your promise of a rich eternal life. Direct our actions according to Your will, so that in the name of Your beloved Son we may abound in good works. Amen Matthew 25:45

[Jesus said to his disciples:]
“Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones,
you did not do for me.”
Reflection
The readings today call us to love our neighbor as oneself. Can anyone truly do that? Perhaps not. And it’s because we’re human. We can achieve it by following the example of Jesus. We can start by listening to our neighbor’s story, visiting the sick, taking food to the hungry. We can take down the barriers to relationships that we continually build up, physical barriers to strangers but also barriers like prejudices, judgments, resentments, and fears. When we try to love our neighbor—and Jesus reminds us that He is one of “these least ones”—that is when we’re reaching for the divine.

Daily Prayers for February 12, 2024
Monday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time

Morning Offering:
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians. In particular, we offer up the intentions of the Holy Father this month, that those with a terminal illness, and their families, receive the necessary physical and spiritual care and accompaniment. Amen

Daily Prayer:
At times we have this deep-felt fear, O Loving Father, that when we talk with You, we are talking to ourselves. Maybe it is the fear that we can never somehow transcend ourselves or perhaps it is only the darkness inherent in our faith. Whatever it is, Lord, give us perseverance so we will never stop praying to You, and grant us a hope that knows during times of trouble You will always be present to us and walk beside us. Amen

Daily Prayer:
Heavenly Father, You sent Your Son to show us what service to others is all about: to cure the sick, feed the hungry, and lift up the oppressed. It is so hard, Lord, to watch anyone suffer. Christian service enables others to live more humanly whether it is through a word of sympathy or counsel, or by an action like clothing the naked or visiting the sick or imprisoned. Help us as true servants of Christ to make the world more human. Amen

Daily Prayer:
You healed the crippled man’s right arm on the Sabbath, O Lord, and enabled him to return to his work. You brought the Abbot Saint Anthony to serve You by a life in the desert of fasting, prayer, endurance, dedication and a focus on things above. Grant through his intercession that denying ourselves, we may always love You above all things and work to serve You. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen
