Inside view of a Bald-faced hornets nest!! 🤩 I’ve never seen one on glass like this before!

Fun Facts:

🐝 They’re not actually hornets! Bald-faced hornets are a type of yellowjacket wasp, named for the white markings on their faces.

🐝 They build super impressive paper nests- They chew up wood fibers, mix them with saliva, and turn the mixture into the gray, football-shaped nests!

How cool is this guy?! Almost put my head in it’s web 😳

This is a yellow garden spider and they’re awesome pest managers- they eat other pests such as mosquitoes, grasshoppers, flies, and moths!

They make large circular webs with a zig zag pattern running through the center 🕸️
When threatened, the spider may rapidly shake its web, making both the web and the spider appear blurry to predators! 🕷️

🐝 Lively yellow jacket nest today!

Ever notice wasps flying in and out of the same little hole? 👀 There’s a good chance you’ve found a yellow jacket nest.

FUN FACT: they don’t usually dig deep nests from scratch. Instead, they love taking over old rodent burrows or other underground cavities. The entrance may just be a small hole, but the nest itself can extend 1–3 feet below the surface, and sometimes even deeper if they’re using an existing tunnel!!

By late summer, a single nest can house thousands of yellow jackets, which is why you’ll often see a steady stream of them coming and going!

If you spot one in your yard, it’s best to admire it from a distance—they’re much more defensive when you’re near their home! 🐝
