Finished a woodlot in Silver Ridge in early March. Very heavy stand of poplar…quaking and bigtooth aspen averaging 2.3 trees per cord. While many trees were totally healthy, a good percentage had a “doty”, or rotten center. We also cut some fir studwood.

A note to landowners. This stand really should have been harvested about 10 years ago. We were very fortunate that this particular stand held together long enough for it to be cut. One extreme wind event over water-saturated ground, and much of it would have gone to the ground. When that happens, the result looks like a pile of “pick up sticks” and a subsequent harvest becomes very difficult and dangerous. Additionally, when big trees come down from natural causes, more damage inevitably occurs, as opposed to planned falling..especially large poppel. They clean out everything in their path.

Thankfully, everything held together and the cut and residual stand look beautiful. All that remains is to pull a skidder bridge once the ice is gone.
We’re in mud season now. On to a new woodlot in May!

Had a great summer/fall operating season, cutting in Oakfield again in 2025. Spent most of my time in hardwood and poplar. Did cut a few loads of big spruce studwood. Cut around some beautiful birch boltwood all summer, coming back to harvest once cooler fall weather arrived.

Had more excitement than we wanted back in August, when one morning we broke through the timber bridge over Downing Brook! With the help of Onil and Nick Beaulieu, and Joe Ledger, we replaced the bridge in 24 hours! Note the pic of maybe an otter (?) keeping an eye on me in the brook.

The history of the Oakfield area continues to amaze me. Several hundred yards away form the South Oakfield Road I found rock piles, barbed wire and page wire fences! I try to imagine a typical week in the lives of those folks.

We harvested about 25 acres, thinning and removing some large overstory, making room for the sun to reach the floor. Many of the aspen were 25” on the stump and had reached or exceeded their useful life. Likewise, many of the white birch had “gone by” and had to go for hardwood pulp. Note the pic with my grandson, Jack Philbrook, standing next to a big hornbeam…don’t think I’ve ever seen one that big!

As a CLP, I experienced an on-site SFI audit, successfully. We had a very enjoyable and satisfying operating season. As always, I’m very proud of the quality of the residual stand, water management and trail system.

We had quite a scare earlier this month, when my trucker, Joe Ledger, loaded with popple, broke through our truckroad bridge in Oakfield. The driver’s side of the bridge failed first, causing the truck to list heavily, almost to the tipping point. Thankfully, the right side then failed, righting the truck. Onil Beaulieu quickly joined us on site to help figure out how, after unloading the wood, to get the front drivers onto solid ground. We accomplished that using only my skidder. Thank God, no one was hurt, and Joe’s truck suffered very minimal damage. It could have turned out much worse.

The next morning, Onil and Nicholas removed the old bridge debris and hauled off site. Joe picked up four new 12”X12”X20’ skidder bridge panels from that helpful crew down at Treeline in Lincoln. By noon, those panels were in place. I had 3”X6” timbers sawed out at Harvey Miller in Golden Ridge, and installed as cross members and running tracks. The final product turned out great and should be solid for at least ten more years.

Spent the winter operating season on a beautiful block in Siver Ridge. The stand was predominantly mature polar…up to 25” at the stump. We focused on aspen removal, leaving all spruce, and smaller fir. The only hardwood removed was in skid trails. Consequently, the residual stand is healthy and should stand up to winds without material loss. We installed a skidder bridge across a small stream.

While some of the most mature trees had blown down, by and large the stand was fortunately in tact and healthy. However, the stand should have been harvested probably 5 years ago. In two or three more years the stand would have “come apart”, resulting in a non-harvestable jumbled mess. When very large, “basket-top” poplar come down randomly in an uncontrolled fashion, they inevitably cause a lot of damage to any trees in the path.

A bit late, but I thought I’d post a couple pictures from my and my son Joel’s successful moose hunts this fall. Joel scored the bull of a lifetime on Tuesday of week 1 in Zone 6, and I scored a young bull in Zone 2 Wednesday morning of week 2. My 16 year-old grandson Jack participated in both hunts! A very special thanks to our good friend, Denis Goulet, for his expert calling ability and overall moose hunting knowledge and experience! We scouted extensively, and I have to say that the hours we spent in the woods in preparation prior to the season were so much fun!

While we had a successful hunt two years ago under grand daughter Brooklyn’s permit, neither Joel nor I had ever drawn a permit. We both drew this year! Thank God for granting us success! Both hunts were tremendously exciting!

I spent the 2024 summer/fall operating season on a private woodlot in Oakfield managed by David Irving, Shelterwood Solutions. A beautiful piece of ground with mature mixed timber. The prescription focused on the removal of fir and aspen, with lesser volumes of spruce and white ash.

The biggest challenge involved cutting relatively narrow fingers of mature timber between sensitive wet runs coming down off a very large hardwood ridge, while protecting those wet runs, which ultimately drain into a stream. The approach required some thoughtful skid trail layout in order to get at all the wood, and longer than ideal skidding distances, but the final result turned out beautiful. The site index is outstanding, and the healthy regen blanket is going to absolutely explode with sunshine now reaching the floor!

Looking forward to returning to this block next summer!

We spent the winter operating season in two cedar stands in Hodgdon. Somewhat similar to last winter, we didn’t experience as much cold weather as we need for these low-lying areas. The wettest terrain never froze, necessitating a lot of time filling skid trails with brush and tops. Both blocks turned out nice. We fortunately finished at the end of February. With the inch of rain and warm temps that last week, the bottom collapsed. Obviously, with the low winter snowfall, runoff will be lower than normal. But, the water table remains very high.

You will NEVER see anything like this on a Broken Arrow harvest! Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the State of Maine are designed and implemented to protect our waters. Certified Logging Professionals are trained in BMPs. And even beyond those principles, the majority of landowners do not want to be left with a trail system full of deep ruts.
