The 3 three things I use in my business from my retail management career:

-KPI's I feel blessed to have learned how to read and analyze all kinds of data. If you know the Acronym UPT, I know you worked in retail.

A lot of business owners struggle with this when they first start their business, but luckily from all my years of reading and summarizing data I never needed training on this.

That's why it's so easy for me to interrupt podcast metrics for clients.

-Project Management- I never even thought that what I did as a Store Manager was basically project management but when you work with a staff of over 30-50 in a holiday season and ever-changing marketing plans, you have to be good at this, or things will fall apart quickly.

Part of what sets me apart in launching podcasts is that I am keeping track of all the little parts and pieces so that my clients don't have to. Thanks to ClickUp, it makes everything a lot easier to do this!

-Adaptable- I wouldn't have made it 10 years in retail if I was not adaptable, and this is a skill that is a must for running your own business otherwise, you will crack pretty quickly. Especially working online, things change so quickly that you will lose your mind if you aren't adaptable!

People really underestimate working in retail, but for me, it was a boot camp for starting my own business. I am so grateful for my experiences and how they led me to my current position.

What experiences are you grateful for?

Do you have a favorite podcaster?

Don't forget to show your support by:

-Sharing their show on social media. This helps more people discover them, and trust me, it works.

-Giving them a 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Apple review. This helps them get noticed when people search for new shows to listen to.

-Send them a message to tell them what you love about their show. This is probably the most personal way to show appreciation and keeps podcasters motivated to keep making more content.

I'm always on the lookout for new podcasts to listen to. What is your favorite podcast? 🥰

I had an absolute blast this Wednesday at a Professional Women's Club of Chicago (PWCC) event.

My three favorite things about this group:

1. You will meet a range of ambitious women from different industries in the Chicago area.
2. They are always looking to bring value to members and guests by making sure they get top-quality speakers for their monthly luncheons. I always walk away learning something.
3. Besides the monthly luncheons, they offer fireside chats and other events to get involved in. They also just brought their mentorship program back which I think is an amazing benefit to members.

A bonus is the location. It's held at the . This is an incredibly beautiful space and is filled with so much history and art. I get excited everytime I get to attend!

Did you do any networking this week? I would love to hear about it!

There are about:

🎧 2.5 Million Podcasts on Apple

However, there are only about 450,000 active podcasts.

How are we defining active podcasts?
-Shows that have posted an episode within the last 90 days.

🤨 What does this mean?

While there are still a lot of shows, the likelihood of getting found is a bit easier than you might think.

But what about those 2 million shows that are not actively posting???

I would venture to guess that most did not create a strategy.

This is likely happening because people underestimate the work of creating a show.

Now.....

For those of you who have been hesitant, I want to give you some good news.

If you plan and strategize correctly, this process is more manageable and, in the long term, more sustainable.

Are you surprised by these stats??

The final question in my series of "The questions that I get asked as a podcast manager."

"Do people actually make money?"

We often look at really big-name podcasters and think if they don't become a huge podcaster, it's not even worth it.

But I am going to debunk that idea today.

I am talking about a no-brainer way that I rarely only hear other podcast managers talk about.

You already know your offer inside and out. You know why people would buy it. You most likely have put a ton of effort into understanding your customers/clients.

You have seen your clients get results from it.

❓So why would you not sell directly to your podcast listeners?

I am going to give a little tough love if you said you want to make money from your podcast, but you think people will just know to go to your website or your social media page and find your offer.

You'll have to get a little uncomfy and sell straight to your audience. That's just the way this works.

❌ Now I am not a fan of slimy salesy pitches or offers.

There is a tactful and ethical way to sell.

I am not saying not to get sponsorships, but being able to sell your own offer from day one is a lot easier.

One tip I do have here is that if you're going to make an offer, do it at the end of the show. This is giving value first and then doing the ask at the end.

One more bit of data if I haven't convinced you already:

❓Did you know podcast listeners are some of the most dedicated? Data from Buzzsprout shows that 80% of people listen to an entire podcast episode. That is dedication!

Now, if you are still a bit nervous about selling, why not at least create a CTA to visit your website or sign up for your newsletter?

What questions do you have?

Let's continue the series "What people ask me about being a podcast manager?":

"I have always wanted to start a podcast but don't know how. It seems like so much work."

🏋️ Yes, it is a lot of work, but if planned and strategized, it probably won't feel that way.

The biggest mistake I see people making with starting a podcast is not having a plan. 🙈

❌ They just think, "Oh, this is cool; I think I have a great idea for starting a podcast. I will start recording, create some cover art, and be good to go."

Obviously, this is not the best idea, but often, when I talk to people about why they still aren't doing their podcasts, it's because they had no plan or unrealistic expectations. So they experience Podfade.

When you have a plan, you can take each task one at a time instead of biting off the entire thing. This also creates the foundational habit of being able to maintain a podcast recording schedule.

I begin working with my clients by determining what day they want to launch. From there, I know how much of a buffer I need to complete things and set deadlines afterward.

I have also created repeatable workflows that I use in (A project management tool). I can't live without it in business in general.

When clients work with me to launch their podcasts as part of their package, we do a 90-minute strategy session. And we go through these questions:

How does the podcast fit into your overall business and marketing plan?
How much time do you have to commit to this?
What are your goals for the show?
Who are you speaking to?

If you don't have any of these things answered, it becomes a lot more overwhelming, and the possibility of the show not being successful is higher.

Because you end up talking about everything and nothing at the same time. 🥴

And if you DIY 🔧your podcast, I would highly suggest doing that as well.

Hopefully, this takes a bit of the fear out of starting a podcast.

If you are thinking of starting a podcast, I still have some availability through the end of the year if you have been thinking of starting, and you know you need support.

😀 Just DM me if you have more questions.

🙀🤔❓Here are some of the reactions that I get when I tell people I am a podcast manager:

"WOW, that is so cool...How did you get into that?"
"I have always wanted to start a podcast but don't know how. It seems like so much work."
"Do people actually make money?"

I thought it might be fun to do a little series and go into a little more detail about each of these questions.

When I started my business as an Online Business Manager I was doing a multitude of different things but the thing that gave me the most joy, the thing that I had a natural inclination for was podcasting.

When I realized that I could just offer podcasting as my only service I knew I had to make a change.

It is one of the best decisions I have ever made. And I feel grateful everyday that this is my life and that I get to work with so many amazing business owners!

If we had a deeper conversation, you would find out that I was in retail management for over ten years before opening my business, and in between that, I taught ESL, which, to many people would not correlate with podcasting.

I think what really brings value to my clients is my endless curiosity. Sometimes too curious as I found myself down a rabbit hole of teeth-cleaning videos on YouTube last week.

All jokes aside my curious nature has allowed me to start learning about podcasting prior to even knowing that I was going to be doing this as a career.

I started listening in 2008 and wondering how all this magic happened—even listening to podcasts about podcasting and how people got started.

I listened to podcasts every chance I had and always found more to add to my library. Never thinking that I would actually help manage people's podcasts. Saying I was bought in is an understatement.

While I am a self-taught editor( I have purchased a few courses), I have decades of leadership, sales, and project management experience.

Isn't it amazing that many of us are doing jobs that weren't even around when we graduated?

I am curious: Are you currently doing something that you never thought you would be doing?
