Put a float switch in place of the piping for the overflow or secondary drain. Who wants a pan full of water in the attic overhead when there is no reason for it ? ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’

AC blowing room temperature air, attic coil dripping slightly โ€” what should I check before calling a tech?
Iโ€™m trying to diagnose an AC issue myself before calling an HVAC technician.

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s happening:

The AC is running and blowing air through the vents, but the air is not cold. It feels like regular room-temperature air, almost like a fan.

The thermostat is set to 65ยฐF, but the house never cools down.

The evaporator coil unit in the attic is dripping a tiny amount of water (maybe a drop every few seconds). Nothing extreme, just a very small drip.

The outdoor condenser unit is running, but it does look a bit dirty. The last time I washed the outside coils was probably about 3 years ago.

A few questions:

Is the small dripping from the attic coil normal, or could that indicate something like freezing/defrosting?

Could dirty condenser coils alone cause the system to blow non-cold air, or would it usually still be somewhat cool?

What basic things should I check myself before calling an HVAC technician?

Are there signs that this could be low refrigerant, frozen coil, capacitor issue, or compressor not engaging?

For context:

Airflow from vents seems normal/strong.

It just isnโ€™t cold at all.

System otherwise sounds like itโ€™s running normally.

Any troubleshooting steps I can safely check would be appreciated.

3 year old gas furnace burning pvc pipe

Smelled burning plastic in the middle of the night and realized it was coming from the furnace in the attic. Turned it off and this morning saw the pvc pipes coming up are burning/melting. I have hvac coming tomorrow morning but just found the original installers info. If this is an install issue on a 3 year old house, should I use the same company or get someone else thatโ€™s more reliable.

Here's one that took some thinking. This very popular contractor in Jackson Tennessee thought it a good idea to try and control the climate on both floors with one unit. First screwup.
So I disconnected the second floor duct system and installed a mini split heat pump. That left me with a 4 ton unit to serve the whole first floor which only needs about 2.5 tons of ac.
I considered dumping the extra air back into the return on the furnace but that would increase internal temps too much in heat and too low in cooling. So my only recourse was to dump the extra air in the enclosed attic.
Instead of abandoning the upstairs duct or removing it, I reconnected it to the supply air with a closed damper. In case the upstairs mini split quits, the supply damper can be opened and the attic damper closed to feed the upstairs.
I took static pressure readings to ensure that the downstairs duct was properly pressurized to meet specs.
There are 3 dampers. One to set back pressure to maintain correct static pressure in the supply duct system. One to control the amount dumped in the attic. One to control air flow upstairs.
All of this could have been avoided if contractors would do the job right the first time. Who cares ? ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’
