⚠️ Microsoft Entra Connect Update Deadline: September 30, 2026

Microsoft has announced that Microsoft Entra Connect Sync version 2.5.79.0 will become the minimum required version by September 30, 2026.

Organizations running an older version should plan to upgrade before the deadline. Once Microsoft’s service change takes effect, environments that have not been upgraded to the minimum required version could experience a significant impact:

❌ All Microsoft Entra Connect synchronization services may fail.

For organizations relying on Entra Connect to synchronize identities between on-premises Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, a synchronization failure can quickly become an operational and security concern.

What should you do now?

🔹 Confirm the version of Microsoft Entra Connect currently running in your environment
🔹 Upgrade to version 2.5.79.0 or later before September 30
🔹 Validate synchronization health following the upgrade
🔹 Don’t wait until the deadline to identify compatibility or configuration issues

Not sure whether your environment is ready? Pileum can help review your Entra Connect configuration, plan the upgrade, and verify synchronization is working properly.

Cybersecurity isn't just about preventing attacks—it's about being prepared when one happens.

One of the most valuable exercises an organization can perform is an Incident Response Tabletop Exercise.

During a tabletop, your leadership and key staff walk through a realistic cyber incident—such as ransomware, business email compromise, or a data breach—and discuss exactly how your organization would respond. The goal isn't to "pass the test." It's to identify gaps in your plans before a real emergency exposes them.

A tabletop exercise helps you:
✅ Validate your incident response plan
✅ Clarify roles and responsibilities
✅ Improve communication between IT, leadership, legal, HR, and public relations
✅ Meet cybersecurity insurance and regulatory expectations
✅ Reduce downtime and business impact during a real incident

When a cyberattack occurs, it's too late to figure out who makes decisions, who contacts legal counsel, or how to communicate with customers. Those conversations should happen long before they're needed.

At Pileum Corporation, we help organizations facilitate practical, realistic incident response tabletop exercises that strengthen preparedness and build confidence across your team.

Don't wait until you're responding to your first cyber incident to test your plan. Practice today so you're ready tomorrow.

🚨 Cybersecurity Alert: Microsoft Defender “RoguePlanet” / “ShieldBreak”

Organizations using Microsoft Defender should be aware of a high-severity privilege-escalation vulnerability, CVE-2026-50656 (“RoguePlanet”), and a newly disclosed patch-bypass technique known as “ShieldBreak.”

Microsoft released an initial fix in July, but ShieldBreak reportedly bypasses that patch, potentially leaving even fully updated Windows environments at risk.

Successful exploitation could allow a low-privileged attacker to gain SYSTEM-level access, disable security controls, establish persistence, access sensitive data, and facilitate lateral movement or ransomware activity.

Recommended actions:
🔹 Verify Microsoft Malware Protection Engine versions and patch levels
🔹 Enable Defender Tamper Protection and least-privilege controls
🔹 Evaluate ASR rules and application allowlisting
🔹 Monitor endpoints for suspicious Defender and SYSTEM-level activity
🔹 Prepare containment procedures while awaiting a complete vendor fix

The key takeaway: Fully patched doesn't always mean fully protected. Layered security controls and strong endpoint visibility remain critical.

🎭 Your Biggest Email Threat Might Not Be Spam... It Might Look Like Your Boss.

Cybercriminals are getting smarter. Instead of sending obvious phishing emails, they're now impersonating trusted people—your CEO, finance director, HR manager, or even one of your vendors—to trick employees into taking action.

💻 A convincing email could ask an employee to:

Transfer funds
Purchase gift cards
Share sensitive information
Reset passwords
Open a malicious link or attachment

Traditional spam filters often can't catch these attacks because the sender may appear legitimate.

🛡️ Barracuda Impersonation Protection uses artificial intelligence to analyze communication patterns, sender identity, and message intent to identify sophisticated impersonation attempts before they reach your inbox.

Protect your organization from:
✅ Business Email Compromise (BEC)
✅ Executive impersonation
✅ Vendor fraud
✅ Account takeover attempts
✅ Financial loss and data breaches

Don't wait until a convincing email becomes an expensive mistake.

📞 Contact Pileum today to learn how Barracuda Email Protection Premium and Impersonation Protection can help keep your organization secure.

🔒 Could your business recover from a ransomware attack?

Ransomware doesn't just target large enterprises—small and mid-sized businesses are frequent targets because attackers know they're often less prepared.

The good news? A few proactive steps can dramatically reduce your risk:

✅ Keep operating systems and applications patched.
✅ Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all accounts.
✅ Train employees to recognize phishing emails and suspicious links.
✅ Maintain secure, offline, and regularly tested backups.
✅ Limit user permissions so employees only have access to what they need.
✅ Use endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools to identify threats before they spread.
✅ Develop and regularly test an incident response plan.

Cybersecurity isn't about eliminating every risk—it's about making your organization a much harder target and being prepared to recover if the unexpected happens.

If you're not sure where your organization's vulnerabilities are, a security assessment can help identify gaps before attackers do.

📢 Did you know? Microsoft charges more for the flexibility of monthly billing.

Many organizations assume that an annual Microsoft 365 subscription costs the same whether it's paid monthly or annually—but that's no longer the case.

If you choose:
✅ Annual commitment + annual payment – You receive Microsoft's lowest price.

If you choose:
📅 Annual commitment + monthly payments – Microsoft applies a premium (typically around 5%) for the convenience of spreading payments throughout the year.

The licenses and commitment term are exactly the same—the difference is simply how Microsoft bills for them.

At Pileum, we help our clients evaluate which option makes the most financial sense based on their budgeting needs and cash flow. Sometimes the flexibility of monthly payments is worth the additional cost, and sometimes paying annually can provide meaningful savings.

If you'd like to review your Microsoft licensing strategy or understand how these billing options affect your organization, we're happy to help.

🚨 570 Security Vulnerabilities. One Month.

Microsoft's latest Patch Tuesday release addresses 570 security vulnerabilities, including several zero-day vulnerabilities—security flaws that attackers were actively exploiting before organizations had a chance to apply the available updates.

While antivirus and firewalls are important, keeping systems patched is one of the most effective ways to protect against cyberattacks. Delaying critical updates can leave organizations exposed to ransomware, data breaches, and other security threats.

At Pileum, we're helping our managed services clients stay protected by accelerating the deployment of these critical security updates and monitoring systems to ensure they remain secure.

🔒 A strong cybersecurity program includes:
✅ Timely security patching
✅ Multi-factor authentication
✅ Endpoint protection
✅ Email security
✅ Regular vulnerability assessments
✅ Employee security awareness training

Cybersecurity isn't about reacting to threats—it's about staying ahead of them.

If you're unsure whether your organization has an effective patch management strategy, we'd be happy to help.
