DIANA OF THE SEA (Marguerite Zorach, 1940) 🦞🦪 and some MAGICAL MAINE moments. I was so fortunate to have a client fly me to Portland, ME to catalogue and appraise their collection of art and antiques in May. I woke up each morning to the most mesmerizing sunrises over the Atlantic and found some time to explore Peaks Island, the Portland Museum of Art, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, and return to Wiscasett, the town next door to where my mom grew up. Maine is in my bones and in my blood, and it felt so good to be back there after several years away. An incredible week and work trip that I will never forget! ⚓️❤️

BEST of the WEST: some highlights of a weekend down to Denver. First time visiting the Denver Art Museum and the Anschutz Collection , a mecca of American Western Art. The last two slides are screenshots as you can take pictures at the latter, but well worth a visit to the salon style treasure trove. Work highlighted includes those by Maynard Dixon, Albert Bierstadt, Grafton Tyler Brown, Fritz Scholder, Billy Schenk, Lucas Foglia, Rockwell Kent, Ernest Blumenshien and others.

An early taste of SPRING 🌱💐. It was a delight to be in San Francisco for an appraisal during ‘Bouquets to Art Week’ and . Over 100 floral designers from around the world created wonderful botanical interpretations of fine art pieces throughout the two museum campuses. The natural beauty of the Bay Area combined with its cultural offerings create a stimulating landscape and I’m grateful for the time there. Happy Spring Equinox!

The COUSE-SHARP HISTORIC SITE is the former homes and studios of E.I. Couse (1886-1936) and Joseph Sharp (1859-1953), American born, European educated artists who formed the Taos Artists Society. Very grateful for the in depth tour organized by when I visited the region earlier this month. I loved seeing the actual objects and pottery used in Couse’s paintings, the whimsical children’s adobe house and slide attached to the main house and a behind the scenes look at the art in storage!

Taos has a unique, colorful, powerful energy with the 1,000 year old Pueblo, the bohemian artist communities and the Spanish Colonial history and culture converging amongst the dramatic backdrop of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. The site seeks to preserve and interpret this crossroads of culture through their collections, research and programming. A must visit if in Taos! ✨

Philip Johnson’s (1906-2005) GLASS HOUSE, c. 1949, New Canaan, CT. “….The only house in the world where you can see the sunset and the moonrise at the same time, standing in the same place.” (Philip Johnson). The 49 acre property is a testament to the evolution of Johnson’s career with other “pavilions” added at different periods scattered through the pastoral landscape, including the ‘kunst-bunker’ (1950s) with Frank Stella’s work shown here, only a fraction of the collection acquired with his late partner David Whitney, and the Sculpture Gallery (c. 1970), currently illuminated with visiting artist Barbara Kasten’s neon pieces.

The Glass House is an iconic American masterpiece. Grateful to enjoy a memorable visit on a beautiful fall day with my family.

DEVIL’S TOWER, or better known to the Lakota and Plains Tribes as Bear Lodge, Bear’s Tipi, Bear’s House and Bear’s Peak, has been a sacred, holy place for thousands of years. Wyoming’s acropolis was shaped by molton rock or magma rising from the core of the earth 65 million years ago. It is still a religious site today used by Indigenous peoples for ceremonies, dances and commemorations, and prayer flags can be found throughout the base. It majestically rises above the landscape and is one of the most magnetic natural formations I have ever seen. It was designated the first National Monument by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.

Grateful an appraisal at a ranch in Wyoming’s Black Hills brought me to this remote corner of the state. Stopped in Casper on the way home to break up the drive and was pleasantly surprised to see a beautiful cyanotype of Devils Tower by . Wyoming is a vast, wide, sometimes desolate, and sometimes sublime state.

ROCKEFELLER LEGACY on the auction block! It is an honor to play a hand in bringing the collection of Valley Ranch: residence of Laurence S. Rockefeller and John D. Rockefeller IV to the for sale this Saturday, September 13th, here in Jackson, WY. The Rockefeller family has been established in Jackson Hole for several decades and is synonymous with the establishment of Grand Teton National Park through their important land acquisitions. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. acquired the JY Ranch on Phelps Lake, est. c. 1906 (first photos), in 1932 and maintained it as a private family retreat until it was dismantled and transferred to the park in 2007 (now the Laurence S. Rockefeller Preserve.) The inception of Valley Ranch, (last pics) north of town, traces back to the 1980s when Laurence and his wife Mary established it as their main residence. True to the family’s reputation as dedicated conservationists, the Rockefeller’s assembled a collection of authentic Native American and Western art that harmonizes with the natural beauty surrounding their home. Included in the collection are three painted panels by Carl Roters (one shown) that ties to the Rockefeller commissioned Mural Room at Jackson Lake Lodge.

It was a privilege to work with the family on the appraisal of the collection and later direct them to the JH Art Auction for sale. *Note* although the Rockefellers have a version of Cyrus Dallin’s “Appeal to the Great Spirit”, 1913, in their collection, a reminder of the larger version that was at the JY Ranch, the pictured photo is not from their collection but it will be auctioned on Sept. 13, lot 358.

Bouncing around BOISE: City of Trees, capital of the Gem State, and halfway between Portland, 0R and Jackson, Boise is mix of both Mountain West and Pacific Northwest but also far away enough from both to be its own distinct island. I enjoyed my visit to the wonderful , went to an artist talk and took in some concerts at Outlaw Field . I was transported to Brooklyn and flowed into downtown like a local on nothing more than a thick yellow inner tube on the Boise River, dodging branches and bridges along the way. A nice little weekend trip to cap off the summer.

The American Western art market continues to show strength as demonstrated by the results of at the 40th annual COEUR D’ALENE ART AUCTION this past weekend in Reno, NV with $22 million in sales, a 96% sell through rate and several world records. The second highest auction result for Maynard Dixon was set by the cover lot, but my heart has an East Coast pull and I’m also drawn to the two works by Wolf Kahn and Rockwell Kent that achieved exceptional results. With the contemporary market softening, it’s nice to see the market for classical American paintings showing resilience. Looking forward to the Jackson Hole Art Auction next in September!

1. Maynard Dixon, “Open Range”, (1942), oil on canvas on board, 36 x 40 in., sold for $2,015,000 with buyer’s premium (est. $800,000- $1,200,000)

2. Wolf Kahn, “Nantucket Summer, 5:30am”, (1994), oil on canvas, 36 x 42 in., sold for $102,850 with buyer’s premium (est. $30,000-$50,000).

3. Rockwell Kent, “Blackhead, Monhegan Island, Maine”, oil on board, 12 x 16 in., sold for $102,850 (est. $20,000-$30,000)

Happy SUMMER SOLSTICE! ☀️✨ A snapshot of summer in the Tetons so far. But more importantly, most of these photos were taken on (or inspired by) PUBLIC LANDS, which are currently under critical threat in the Western US of being sold off in a mandatory fire sale to private development according to terms in the reconciliation bill before the Senate. I called my senators for the first time this week, and I encourage you to do the same to express your opposition. It was easy and took 5 mins. These lands belong to us, the public, and vulnerable wildlife collectively. Once they are gone, we can’t get them back. Art and nature have a deep intertwined relationship and are always worth fighting for. 202-224-3121 for the Senate switchboard.
