Now that beech trees have leafed out, signs of Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) are becoming easier to spot.

If you have a beech tree, take a closer look at the leaves. Dark striping or banding between the leaf veins, curled or thickened leaves, smaller foliage, thinning canopy, and early leaf drop can all be signs of BLD.

If left untreated, BLD can continue to weaken the tree over time and may lead to serious decline.

Treatment is done during a short window in the summer, so now is the time to have your beech tree evaluated. Not every beech tree is a good candidate, which is why our team starts by inspecting the tree and determining whether treatment makes sense. ✅

According to a recent CDC release, weekly ER visits for tick bites are running higher than usual right now.

With Memorial Day Weekend just around the corner and more time outside on the horizon, now is a good time to pay closer attention to tick pressure around the yard. We put together some important information on where tick pressure tends to build and how homeowners can manage it.

Read more here:

If ticks are active around the property, it changes how comfortable that outdoor space feels. For a lot of homeowners, that is when tick control stops feeling like an extra and starts feeling like part of making the yard usable again.

Plastic barriers and landscaping fabrics might seem like a good idea… but your trees may disagree.

We’ve been called out to many properties to look at struggling trees, only to find landscape fabric, plastic barriers, girdling roots, compacted soil, or other issues interfering with what the tree needs below ground.

Organic mulch does a lot more than cover bare soil. Wood chips, bark, pine needles, and shredded leaves help create conditions that are closer to what trees would have in the forest.

That means:
• steadier soil temperatures
• less w**d competition
• better moisture retention
• slower runoff
• added organic matter as it breaks down
• fewer mower and string trimmer injuries near the trunk

Plastic barriers and landscaping fabrics can block the natural exchange of air, water, and organic matter that tree roots depend on. Over time, they can also trap roots, compact soil, and make the landscape harder to maintain.

For most trees and shrubs, skip the man-made barrier and use organic mulch instead.

Just remember: mulch should be spread like a donut, not piled like a volcano.

We are currently in round 2 of our 6-Step Lawn Care Program.

This late spring visit helps keep the program moving with another application of pre-emergent crabgrass control, along with a continued focus on lawn density, consistent growth, and early monitoring for surface-feeding insects.

If your lawn could use some support this season, Aspen Tree and Turf is here to help. 🌱

Sooty Mold 101 ⚠️

Sooty mold looks like a black film on leaves and branches, and it can make plants look worse than they actually are. The mold itself is not the main issue. It grows on the sticky honeydew that pests leave behind, such as aphids, scale, and whiteflies.

A common misconception is that treating the pest will make the mold disappear right away. The treatment stops the source of the honeydew, but the existing mold will remain until weather, time, or gentle cleaning breaks it down. If someone wants it gone immediately, the only real options are natural weathering, light hand cleaning on smaller plants, or pruning affected tips.

Sooty mold can also show up on decks, siding, patio furniture, and even cars parked beneath infested trees. It does not usually damage those surfaces, but it can definitely create a sticky, messy nuisance, especially this time of year when people are getting outdoor spaces ready for Memorial Day weekend and the rest of the summer season.

If you are seeing black residue on your plants or around your property, Aspen Tree and Turf can help identify the pest behind it and recommend the right next step. 🌱
