RIP Gramps (30 years ago today) 😔
First pic: This is my mom (r), at 23, with her parents, Doug and Alda, in Fredericton, New Brunswick 🇨🇦, in 1956.
My Mom and Dad would get married the following year, and Fredericton would eventually become the city where I grew up.
Gramps was 47 in that first picture. Nan was 49. Mom looks impossibly young to me now! 😳
And here’s a little perspective: this first picture was taken in July 1956. Eisenhower was US president (St. Laurent was CDN Prime Minister). The US interstate highway system had just been authorized. Elvis had just released “Hound Dog.” And that very month, Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, setting off an international crisis.
Meanwhile, in Fredericton, my family was just living life.
I miss all 3 of them. But today, I’m especially thinking about Gramps. It’s hard to believe he’s been gone for 30 years.
For those who knew him, this is a little reminder of a great man. And for those who didn’t, this is where my story began.
Funny how one old picture can make 70 years disappear in a moment.
The second pic is one of his last portraits.
