Did you guess right?

Here are my best tips for making the most of Pinterest as a product-based business:
1️⃣ Become a verified merchant. To do this you must have a business account and meet their guidelines, have an active catalog, & install the Pinterest tag on your website.
2️⃣ Utilize Idea Pins. Idea pins are similar to Stories on IG and get a lot of organic traffic. Your Idea pin might even be featured on the front page of Pinterest (it’s happened to me twice!)
2️⃣ Utilize catalog ads. Pinterest reps will help you set up ads and will promote your products to people searching in your category. As little as $5/day can go far on Pinterest.

Remember, Pinterest is more like a search engine then a social media platform so content that is timely and relevant does the best.

Have you tried to make Pinterest work for your business?

I’m passionate about numbers (and not just because I am a certified accountant 🤓)

Plain and simple, you can’t be strategic if you don’t know your metrics.

Here are 9️⃣ things I track every single week with my store

When you track these week over week, it’s easy to see where the problem is if things start going off the rail. And while there are some industry standards for a few of these, the best thing to measure against is your own store!

Got a question about any of these? Let me know in the comments or send me a DM

You’ve spent months sourcing your products, building a website, and setting up your business - you’re ready to launch!

BUT WAIT…

Before you take your store live there are a few things you need to check. After all, nothing would be worse then having your first customers not be able to complete their purchase because your store isn’t set up correctly to capture payments!

When I was launching my store a few years ago I wished I had a complete checklist of what to do before taking my store live, but sadly I couldn’t find one 🤔

Here are six quick things to check before you launch. If you’re like me and want a little more assurance, I have an in-depth launch checklist on my website that covers everything you need to do before you launch! Go check it out at the link in my bio ✔️

When to hire help with your e-commerce business🤔

There is a lot I could say on this topic but here are some quick guidelines:

Under $1k/mo: invest in a group coaching program or course to grow your revenue. Fulfillment should be light enough for you to handle on your own

$1k-$5k/mo: at this point it is worth hiring a virtual assistant (VA) part time to help with everything from keeping the website updated, customer service, and social media. It may also be worth having an intern to help with fulfillment if you are getting more than 10 orders a day. Just make sure to run your numbers first to figure out how much you can pay them

$5k-$20k/mo: congrats! You are ready to hire your first employee. This person should be a generalist - meaning they are ready to jump in with whatever task needs to be done from marketing to fulfillment. Just make sure to factor in unemployment insurance, disability, and other costs associated with payroll when calculating your budget

Over $20k/mo: at this point you will likely have multiple employees and/or contractors. Once this happens, each person should have a specific role (i.e. operations manager, marketing director, customer service rep, etc). Also keep in mind you are only able to effectively manage a handful of people so as you grow, you will need to put in place some type of hierarchy to make sure you are able to focus on what you do best!

When it comes to hiring people, how do you feel? Anxious or excited?

My favorite part of owning an online store is curating the products we carry! Here are the top 3 places I scout for new products:

1️⃣ In-person trade shows! There are trade shows for almost every industry or niche. Although most of them have been on hold for the past year+, there is nothing like being able to physically see and hold a product before purchasing. I almost always find a new-to-me brand that I love when I go to a trade show.

The background picture is from the last show I attended in Jan. 2020 in Paris 😍

2️⃣ Instagram - it takes some digging but I love the “you may also like” feature and the explore page to find new brands.

3️⃣ Online wholesale websites (such as ). These websites host independent brands and sell everything from home decor to beauty. An unexpected plus of these kinds of sites is the ordering process is streamlined so you aren’t dealing with multiple order forms and logins.

Don’t forget to save this post to reference later 😉

Do you know what your bestsellers are?

The goal is to always have these in stock and to feature them front and center on your website and in your marketing.

The other 80% of your products are where you get to be creative and hopefully find additional bestsellers to add to your list - just make sure you don’t tie up too much cash in inventory for these products!

I might do a training at some point on this because inventory planning is SO critical for product businesses but a topic that I couldn’t find a lot of information about when I was first starting out.

Tell me, do you use the 80/20 rule (also called the Pareto Principle) in other areas of your life? It’s so interesting how universally applicable it is 🤓

Tbh, my first year in business was one giant learning exercise but the most valuable thing I learned was who my customers are.

Once you understand them:
✨ your marketing becomes more targeted
✨ there is increased loyalty and repeat buyers
✨ you know exactly what products to produce or buy

Yes, we all need & want sales, but make sure that isn’t the only measure of “success” you are evaluating - especially your first year in business!

Still haven’t started that business you keep talking about?

THAT’S OKAY!

I probably annoyed my friends and family for over two years talking about before I actually went for it 😏

Life happens, office jobs leave us too exhausted by the end of the day to work on our own thing, there is never enough money, there is a fear it won’t work out… I totally get it.

But the number one thing I wish I had known when first starting out? That businesses take TIME to grow and the sooner you start, the sooner you will have the business of your dreams.

For me it took taking a sabbatical and moving to Copenhagen for 3 months to finally get my business off the ground but I promise you, you don’t need an “eat, pray, love” moment to change your life! Embrace small steps everyday and don’t stop until you reach your goal.
