There are so many resume Problems people encounter. Below are the Top 5 I have encountered over the last 2 years.
1. You found a job you want or a career opening in your current company but feel you lack experience.
You look at the posting and you are scrolling through and you just cant seem to see where your experience fits into this role. You want it so bad though.
This is where you look at your skills with me that you have been acquiring over the years and we focus the resume to that specific career path.
2. Your Degree isn't relevant to what you are applying for.
Just because your degree doesn't seem like it might fit in the career path you are choosing. This is where we sit down and talk about the courses you took, the extracurricular activities involved and anchor it to what you are applying for.
3. You have a large gap in work and feel its just going to annihilate any chance you have of getting this new position.
This is what I was talking about the other day. This is where knowing different resume layouts and how to focus the resume on the position and your skills comes into play. The longer you are out of the workforce the harder it is to get back statistically but that doesn’t make it impossible.
4. Frequent job changes in the last 5-7 years. Some people work a lot of temporary or seasonal roles and it doesn’t show dedication or reliability. That doesn’t mean that you are doing anything wrong are flakey, it could just mean that you take on seasonal roles to work with your life. However, in a chronological resume it could look not as good as you hoped. This is once again where you need to sit back and try a different layout or see how you can focus the resume.
5. Thought there are many others the last point I am going to touch on is lengthy resumes. Some people have pages and pages of their Resume, highlighting every accomplishment they ever made and they have no clue how to cut it down. Sometimes it's just breaking down what's being said into smaller descriptions, sometimes it's just changing the focus of the resume to highlight only the skills relevant to a specific role, or its restructuring completely. (this is where I come in)
These are the most common mistakes people make or encounter. I have spent the last several years on helping people to overcome these road blocks. I look forward to working with some of you. A Resume is the first step in the rest of your life, if you are afraid to take that step, I have no problem holding your hand while you do so.
