Some choices keep you busy. Others help you build. ✊

As agency owners, we spend so much time taking care of clients, candidates, and our teams that it’s easy to forget we’re supposed to be building a business, too.

And here’s what I’ve learned after 25 years in this industry: Growth doesn’t always mean doing more. Sometimes it means doing things differently.

Saying no to the wrong opportunities. Building a team you can trust. Charging what you’re worth. Creating systems that don’t require you to be involved in every little decision.

The goal isn’t just a bigger agency. It’s a more profitable, sustainable business that gives you the freedom to actually enjoy what you’ve built.

Because being busy and being successful aren’t always the same thing. 💜

One of the quickest ways to lose confidence in your pricing is to hear:

“That is too expensive.”

Especially when you hear it more than once.

It can make you question the fee, the offer, and whether the market will support what you are charging.

But not every no is evidence that your price is wrong.

Part of running a healthy agency is understanding what it actually costs to deliver your service well, what your expertise is worth, and what the business needs in order to be sustainable.

Of course pricing should be reviewed.
Markets change.

Businesses change.

Services evolve.

But someone choosing not to buy does not automatically mean you need to lower the price.

Sometimes the standard you need to protect is the value of the work itself.

One of the very best parts of this industry will always be the people. ❤️

The friendships built over the years, the familiar faces you cannot wait to hug, and the new connections that somehow feel like old friends.

A quick trip to Charlotte, a wonderful evening around the table, and a sweet reminder that some of the greatest gifts this industry has given me have nothing to do with business.

It is always the people. Until next time, friends! ❤️

One person getting frustrated may be an isolated issue.

Ten people getting frustrated in the exact same place?

That is information.

We are quick as business owners to explain away patterns.

Candidates ghost. Clients do not read. The team forgot. People are impatient.

Sometimes all of that is true.

But sometimes the pattern is telling you something about the business.

Where are people consistently getting stuck? What question keeps coming up? What handoff keeps getting missed? What part of the process creates the same problem over and over?

Your business is giving you feedback all the time. Pay attention to the patterns.

A little date night with my favorite little gentleman. 💙

Lately, I have been making some big, brave decisions about what I want life and business to look like moving forward.

After 25 years of building a business, it’s easy to forget that just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should keep doing it.

Sometimes growth looks like doing more. Sometimes it looks like having the courage to do less.

Less of what drains your time and energy. More of what matters most.

Tonight, that looks like a date with this handsome boy. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 💙

At one point, fewer than 15% of the nannies who started our application process actually finished it.

It would have been very easy to decide we had a candidate problem.

Maybe people were not committed. Maybe they did not want to complete paperwork. Maybe “candidates today” were the issue.

Except when we looked more closely, we found duplicate questions, unnecessary steps, too many handoffs, and places where people had no idea what happened next.

Our screening was not the problem.
The friction around it was.

Before you decide people are unwilling to follow your process, make sure the process deserves to be followed.

Agency owners, I say this with love: your brain is not an operating system.

If you are the one remembering every follow-up, every email, every check-in, every candidate update, and every placement touchpoint, eventually something is going to get dropped.

Not because you do not care. Because you are running a company.

The communication that matters needs to live outside of your head. Build the template. Create the checklist. Assign the owner. Automate what makes sense, and keep the human touch where it matters most.

Because your client experience should not depend on whether you happened to have a calm Tuesday.

Consistency is part of the standard.

We talk often about being relationship-driven in this industry.

But eventually the question becomes: does the experience actually feel relational?

Because you can say “relationship first” on your website and still build a process that feels transactional, repetitive, or impersonal.

Systems matter. Structure matters. Documentation matters.

But none of those things should make people feel like a file number.

The best processes give your team MORE room to build relationships, not less.

Paris, you were different this time. 🇫🇷✨

A little slower, a little warmer, a little more chaotic… but still full of moments I’ll never forget. Including seeing Céline Dion, which was genuinely the best concert I have ever seen. ❤️

Until next time, Paris.

One of the most useful questions we have asked when reviewing our own processes is incredibly simple:

Why do we do this?

Sometimes there is a very good answer.

It protects the family.
It strengthens the screening process.
It creates clarity.
It helps us make a better placement.

Those are standards worth protecting.

But sometimes, when we are honest, the answer is simply that this is how we have always done it.

There is a difference.

A strong standard has a purpose. And as our agencies grow and change, I think it is worth making sure the processes around that standard are still serving the outcome we intended.

Protect the standard. Be willing to question the habit.

That sounds much more like you to me.
