As a Distinguished Toastmaster and professional speaker, one of my favorite topics to teach is the art of the speech introduction.

Why? Because how you begin often determines whether your audience leans in — or tunes out.

A strong introduction does more than “start” a speech. It sets the tone, builds credibility, creates connection, and prepares the audience for the message that follows.

I’ll be presenting on this topic at the EQ Leadership Toastmasters Club meeting this Wednesday.

Guests are welcome to attend in person or via Zoom.

If you speak, lead meetings, facilitate trainings, introduce presenters, or simply want to communicate with more confidence, I’d love to have you join us.

I had one of those days this weekends that reminds me why this work matters so much. 🌿

Friends of Healing Warrior Hearts gathered at the beautiful Blue Lotus Center in West Bend, WI — and instead of a conference room, we had willow trees, still water, kayaks, and a fire pit to sit around.

There's a reason healing happens differently outdoors. When you take away the fluorescent lights and the agenda, and just let people breathe, connect, and be present with each other — something shifts. Conversations get real. Walls come down. People remember why community matters.

As someone who's spent years in veterans' advocacy and transformational speaking, I'm always looking for spaces that do half the work for you. Blue Lotus Retreat is one of those places — quiet, grounding, and genuinely restorative.

If you run a nonprofit, a business, or a group that could use a day (or a weekend) away from the noise — I can't recommend this venue enough. Sometimes the best strategy session is the one that starts with a paddle on the water.

💙 Grateful for this community, this place, and the people who show up for each other.

𝙂𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙛 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚. 🤍

Today is National Grief Awareness Day, and I wanted to pause and say this out loud: however you're grieving — whenever you're grieving — there's no "right" pace to it. Not weeks, not months, not years. Grief moves on its own clock.

If you're missing someone today, please be gentle with yourself. And if someone came to mind while you read this, you don't have to say who — just know they're being carried with you today. If you'd like, tag them. Or share below something small that helps you process your own grief — a walk, a song, a photo, a quiet ritual. Sometimes just naming it helps.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out:
📱 Text HELLO to 741741 (Crisis Text Line)
📞 Call or text 988
💬 Or find a warmline — trained peers who understand what it's like to need support — at MHAnational.org/warmlines

You are not alone in this. 🤍

Most of us want to help.

The problem is, we’re often afraid of saying the wrong thing—or we simply don’t know what to do next.

That’s one of the reasons I became a Mental Health First Aid Instructor.

Mental Health First Aid gives everyday people practical tools to recognize signs that someone may be struggling, start a conversation, offer appropriate support, and help connect that person with professional resources when needed.

You don’t have to be a therapist to make a difference.

Sometimes you just need to know what to do when life gets hard.

💛 Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about Mental Health First Aid, the workshops I offer through DiannaJoy Unlimited, and how these skills can strengthen our families, workplaces, veteran communities, and organizations.

If you’ve ever wanted to feel more confident supporting someone through a difficult season, Mental Health First Aid is a powerful place to start.

If you’d like to learn more or bring a workshop to your workplace, church, veterans group, or organization, send me a message or comment “MHFA" below. 💛

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’m truly best at.

And I keep coming back to this:

I help people know what to do when life gets hard.

Sometimes that means helping someone recognize when a friend, coworker, family member, or fellow veteran may be struggling.

Sometimes it means helping a person who feels overwhelmed identify one small, manageable next step.

Sometimes it means giving leaders and organizations practical tools to better support the people around them.

I’ve spent much of my life in roles where people needed more than encouragement—they needed practical guidance, support, and a way forward.

That’s the work I want to do more of.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more about mental health, resilience, Mental Health First Aid, and some of the workshops I’m developing through DiannaJoy Unlimited.

But I’d also love to hear from you:

When life gets hard, what do you think people need most—someone to listen, practical tools, encouragement, resources, or something else?

𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 “𝙄’𝙢 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙢𝙚𝙙” 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩.

Sometimes it looks like:

• Putting off simple decisions
• Feeling irritated by little things
• Being tired even after resting
• Avoiding people
• Having trouble focusing
• Saying “I’m fine” because explaining feels like too much

One thing I’ve learned is that people don’t always need a major solution in the moment.

Sometimes they need someone to notice.

Sometimes they need permission to admit, “This is a lot.”

And sometimes they just need help figuring out the next small step.

What does overwhelm tend to look like for you—or in the people you care about?

I’m excited to share a new chapter in my work supporting individuals, families, workplaces, and communities! 💜

I am now qualified as a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Instructor for both the Adult program and the Military, Veterans and their Families program.

Mental Health First Aid helps people recognize signs that someone may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge, respond with greater confidence and compassion, and connect that person with appropriate support. Sometimes knowing what to notice, what to say, and what to do next can make a life-changing — and potentially life-saving — difference.

I’m now available to provide MHFA training for:

• Individuals who want to be better prepared to support family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors
• Businesses and workplaces that want to strengthen employee wellbeing and create a more supportive culture
• Veteran and military-serving organizations
• Community groups, nonprofits, churches, clubs, and other organizations
• Teams and leaders who want practical tools for responding to mental health concerns with confidence and compassion

If you would like to learn more about bringing Mental Health First Aid training to your workplace, organization, community, or even participating personally, I would love to talk with you.

📧 Contact me at [email protected]

And please share this post. You never know who in your network may be looking for this training — or who may someday use what they learn to help someone through a very difficult moment.

Knowledge. Compassion. Action.
Together, we can help people feel seen, heard, supported — and connected to help when they need it most. 💜
