Looking for something simple to make around the fire?

Fried apples with nuts are an easy way to turn a few basic ingredients into a warm side dish or dessert.

𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
2–3 apples, sliced
A small amount of butter or bacon grease
Sugar to taste
Cinnamon (optional)
¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
1️⃣ Melt the butter or grease in a skillet over the fire.
2️⃣ Add the sliced apples and cook until they begin to soften.
3️⃣ Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
4️⃣ Stir in the chopped nuts.
5️⃣ Continue cooking until the apples are tender and lightly caramelized.

Serve warm and enjoy by the campfire!

June was often one of the most intense months of the Civil War.

With spring rains fading and roads becoming more passable, armies launched major campaigns, marched long distances, and fought some of the war’s hardest battles. Soldiers spent their days moving between camps, digging fortifications, standing picket duty, and enduring the heat that came with the start of summer.

In 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟴𝟲𝟰, Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Robert E. Lee were locked in the brutal Overland Campaign. Battles such as Cold Harbor and the opening movements toward Petersburg turned June into a month remembered for relentless marching, trench digging, and heavy casualties.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: Reflector Oven

Before modern ovens, there was the “tin kitchen.”

This Reflector Oven is a reproduction of the style used from the late 1700s onward, designed to sit in front of an open fire and reflect heat onto the food. It allowed for baking and roasting right at the hearth, no built-in oven required.

It features a side slot for a spit, making it versatile for various cooking methods. Measuring 16" wide, 12" high, and 11" deep (excluding legs and handles), it’s well-suited for living history cooking, demonstrations, or use at home.

𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐞: Cinnamon Biscuits

Sometimes, a simple treat around the fire goes a long way.

Shared by Mark Leathers from Rolla, Missouri, these campfire cinnamon biscuits are easy to make and a good addition to any camp setup.

Serves: 3–6

𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
1 can of buttery flaky biscuits
Sugar
Cinnamon
Aluminum foil

𝗔𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲
Keep biscuits cool by placing them in a plastic bag with ice or an ice pack. Pack sugar and cinnamon separately.

𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹
Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over a layer of foil, then place biscuits on top. Add more sugar and cinnamon over the biscuits, then cover with another layer of foil.

Place over the fire on a rack, hot rock, or directly on coals. Turn occasionally to prevent burning and cook until done.

Simple, warm, and a good way to end the day in camp.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: Spiritus Frumenti Tin

Medicinal tins like this were a standard part of Civil War–era medical kits. Labeled “Spiritus Frumenti” (grain alcohol), they were used to store and dispense spirits for medical use in the field.

This reproduction square medicine tin measures 4¼” long, 1⅞” deep, and 4¾” high to the top of the spout, built to reflect the size and function of original examples.

A practical, historically accurate piece for medical displays, reenactments, or collections.
